VOX Defiant
« on: February 11, 2009, 05:50:26 am »
I bought this amp recently for 200 USD. http://s415.photobucket.com/albums/pp231/throsturv/VOX%20Defiant/ Hope those of you interested can open this link. This amps is probably from around 1967. The thing is that I have NEVER owned or played through a Solid State amp in my whole life, and thought I never would. I had VOX AC30 back in the days, and loved it. This amp however makes me very interested because I remember, and know that some of the sounds from the Sgt Peppers days came from this amp. I am going to rebuild it and use it along with my other amps.

Yeah, it did before I started my recap job. Sounds unreal and will "defiantly" sound better once I´we put in all new electrolytes. It is all original and very early, from ´66. The serial number is 1080, the serial starts at 1000. Saying is that Stones only used Vox solid amps from ca. 1967 to 1970, Satisfaction etc.

And here I was thinking from your tread title that you had an old Vox amp that refused to be fixed.
Guides on your quest for tone.
Oh yeah, and I'm usually just kidding so don't take me too seriously.

From the VOX showroom a quote on it:

"The Defiant

The bigger brother to the Conqueror, The Defiant is esentially a Conqueror with two extra power transistors and a HF horn in the speaker cabinet.

Controversy has surrounded this amplifier concerning whether The Beatles used Defiants or Conquerors during their 1967 recording sessions of Sgt. Peppers and Magical Mystery Tour. The amplifiers are so similar in size and construction that photographic records cannot for certain reveal the true answer. If past VOX/Beatle history is applied here, a vote for the Defiant would be a good bet over the Conqueror as it is known that The Beatles were usually presented with VOX's biggest and best. "

:) Yeah, I had not thought of this. Was not sure what this word meant. I looked "defiant" up in the dictionary, it seems to mean "provokative", "stubborn", "refusing to obey" etc.  :D

> Was not sure what this word meant.

Your word-meaning is correct, as far as it goes.

VOX is very british. And "defiance/defiant" has special meaning to the brits. They "defied" the Spanish Armada, they "defied" Napoleon, they "defied" German conquest in World War Two.

Twelve Brit navy ships from 1522 to the late 20th century were named "HMS Defiance". Here's one giving defiance to somebody:

The Defiant was a British fighter aircraft and bomber interceptor in the Second World War.

British railway engine GWR 4073 was renamed Defiant in January 1941, commemorating the Battle of Britain.

Getting closer to VOX time:

The Defiant Ones (1958) is a US film about two escaped prisoners with bad-attitudes who must cooperate to survive.

H.M.S. Defiant is a British film released in 1962 (shortly before these VOXen). The French fleet attacks. The Defiant is the only vessel able to save the day. Of course the day is saved... although the crew hates their officers, they are a bunch of DEFIANT brits who defy the French even more than their officers.

"Defiant" also appears in Star Trek and GI Joe fiction, and some other stuff, but long after your VOX.

Thanks PRR, very interesting. Yes it´s different how the English language is used in the USA and GB. When I was young, I lived on the east coast of Iceland and from there we could listen to many European radio stationes on the LW.

I learned my English listening to BBC and the famous pirate radios, Radio Luxemburg and Radio Caroline. Also by listening to American and British Rock and Roll, and by reading novels and magazines in English.

This is a very interesting link to a site about the legendary Radio Caroline. http://www.radiocaroline.co.uk/#home_content.html%%0%%0%%1
