Decent Freeware Photoshop type program
« on: February 21, 2009, 12:52:05 am »
I thought I'd share a pretty slick little free photoshop program I've been using. Not having dollars running out of my rear end and long ago gave up my pirate flag, I was in need of a photoshop program. I did a search and came up with a darn nice freeware program called Gimp (Graphic Image Manipulation Program). It does quite a nice job and has some nice effects, and saves in many formats. The link is:

http://www.gimp.org/

I was able to create a custom canvas of 17" x 2.5" and drew up a decent black and white graphic for a faceplate. I think I'll go to Kinko's and have them print and laminate a few just in case I screw something up. Its pretty cool in that it does allow pretty exacting positioning using rulers in pixels or inches and a variety of other measurements so a little judicial measurement of the holes in the head chassis I had and I think I got it nailed. I'm just doing a simple tweed deluxe head in a weber 18watt chassis so there's lots of room and it'll end up in a marshall style head box. More on this when I actually get it printed up, but thought I'd give Kudo's for a great program at a even better price. :D

Regards,

I'm a Gimp user for ~6-7  years now....I dig it. I only had a problem with 1 version of it (out of many), but a simple update cleared the recurring error and all has been kosher since.
Another free open-source program I'd recommend is Open Office www.openoffice.org  for things that Microsoft Office would do... i.e. Word Processing, Powerpoint, Spreadsheet etc. You can even save files in formats compatible with MS-Office.

I'm still using Paint Shop Pro 7

Corel bought them out and proceeded to ruin the program.

Actually both pieces of software mentioned are powerful professional level applications.

If you like to program check out Sharp Edit.
