Brownsugar on the Green Juke Amp
« on: February 25, 2009, 07:38:33 pm »
I mentioned in another post the Keith thing my ole green juke 5e3 build had going on. So I recorded another quick and dirty clip, same deal, straight into a MR8 no effects, volume not exactly loud cause the Wife was home, it sounds even more authentic if you turn it up more. Guitar was a bit of a cheat, I didn't use my telecaster. I used a SG jr. (bolt on neck cheap SG epi) with a single P-90 in the bridge. Its a nasty little guitar but works great for open tunings and slide especially. Check it out and see if it gets close to Keef.. :D

Love It!

I can't get enough of that 5E3 tone! Sounds great, even at spouse-approved levels.  :D

Dang bro, I want to jam with you man.

Nice sounds from that amp! I could hear some lead picking along with that, and I'd love to do that. We're doing one stones tune, Honky Tonk Women, and I'd add that one, but dunno about the guys. I've been trying to talk them into more bluesy stuff, but they want to have a more metal sound. Seems weird for a bunch of old farts to be doing metal, so we're doing a compromise I guess. Ayway, do let me know if you get down by Tucson, I'll definitely come check you out.

Later,
Jim

Thanks boss, I will definitely give you a shout should I get down there. We do a few Stones tunes now the band is back together (we had a implosion for a few months, but its back together) and we'll be broadening our stuff with a REALLY good keyboard player who comes on board this week. Due to my health I've had to miss some things and this makes it easier if I'm to ill to do a gig, but during the audition of the keyboards the six piece sounded AMAZING. I'm really anxious to get to the kind of tunes we are going to be able to cover now. We do Brown Sugar, Under my thumb and Dead Flowers, I'd also like to do Tumbling dice now we have keys. We kinda run the gamete from Rockabilly, Chicago blues and roots rock/blues and we change it up a bit with things like Kentucky Headhunters 'To much to lose' and some more modern tunes because our Singer can pull it off. We also do stuff like Link Wray's Rawhide, The Shadows 'Apache' and finish shows with 'Foghat' version of 'Just want to make love to you', from there it segways into 'Why don't we do it in the road' (very loud and brash) and right out of that, more Link Wray with 'Batman' (he did the original version for the TV show), then its hit the final chord, kick over the instruments and cue up the pyrotechnics... (ok we skip the last two steps)... :D ;D
That amp does the Foghat tune we do incredibly well, just dime a tweed deluxe with a ax7 in V1 and voila instant rock tone.

Regards,

Dyna

Ok, "REALLY good" and "keyboard player" is the definition of an oxymoron! ;)

Great tone you got there, my friend!  Nice chops too!  I just love when folks talk about how simple Keefs playing is and that anyone can stand there and strum.....yeah right.  We used to do the live version of Midnight Rambler and never failed to get one or more drunk girl up dancing like a professional (if you know what I mean!), when we started the chugging out of the middle break.  Ahh, the memories..... :-X

Thanks Buddy, appreciate it. Well the whole band thing is dead for me again. Health has forced me to accept not playing out now (actually the band decided for me, truth be told). Its all good, though.
I think people like Keef are under appreciated too. My timing on that clip wasn't representative of what I can do rhythm wise, just was a quick and dirty on the couch deal. Another very good rhythm player is of course Pete Townsend, amazing rhythm player (as was Jimi Hendrix too!).

Dyna, you hang in there man  >:(.   Fire up the Mixcraft and do your own thing.

I gave up playing live a long time ago.  Yeah, I miss all the groupies, sex, drugs, and all the free equipment from Marshall, Fender, etc... - but we were running out of room in the house and my wife was never too keen on all that other stuff anyway.... ::) ::) ::)

It's funny that you mention Jimi.  One absolute fav of mine is his live version of Johnny B. Goode.  His playing is spot on and if you have seen the video, you would also see the behind the back, playing with his teeth, between his legs, etc. - and he does not miss a beat!  Amazing.  Pete Townsend?  What a musical journey his life has been!  What a catalog!!!

You don't need a band to have fun.

Recording complete tunes by yourself is lots of fun and really satisfying.
Plus it's a huge learning experience that gets your brain pumpimg.

Yeah Doug, I listen to your stuff and know that, I just need to take more time doing it than I normally do. Your stuff is proof of what you say, you do a great job with it. I think I can get along with myself well enough to do it...  ;D

It can be a huge pain to do drum stuff.
I have no idea what the hell those guys are hitting and when to hit it.  ;D

Yeah, there are certainly upsides to the Mixcraft option - no LSD (lead singer disease), no Keylord players complaining about (gasp!) having to play the actual melody without sounding like a revival church service, no Stanley Clark wannnabees wanting every song to sound like the breaks in a Sienfeld show, and no Carl Palmer ismyherobutIcan'ttapmyfootandchewgummuchlesskeepabeat drummers.  And you know that if you needed some brass (for some goshforsaken reason!), they will PAY YOU to perform.  So, the way to look at it is this: If you need a few bucks for mad money, record a Chicago tune!

Haha, yeah I WON'T miss the lead guitar player who couldn't play rhythm to save his life filling every hole with something stupid. Holes in the music are good, they aren't spaces to put some stupid lead fill with a over effected bad guitar tone.. (I.E. a fender stand alone reverb surfed out and then add overdrive and delay) ::)
