fun (?) job coming up
« on: March 03, 2009, 04:33:53 pm »
The fuel pump, which is in the gas tank, just died on my S-10 4X4. I'm debating wether to take the box off, or drop the tank.  The box has all new hardware holding it on, but it's still a pain to take off.  Dropping the tank is no picnic either, and the bolts on it will likely snap off >:(
So that's my next project, when the weather gets above freezing.  I do have a shop to work in, that has two overhead furnaces, but warmer weather helps my motivation. :)
I'll never figure this out......

6 bolts will take that box off.  It would be quicker to be on your back for the box than messing with that gas tank. Then you can work on the tank from a stool.

Crap, bad news.
I have a 89 S10 pickup.
I think I had the pump replaced once about 1993 or so.
Can't wait for it to go again.
i'll pay to have that one done.

I have a new EGR valve sitting on the bench ready to get installed when it gets warm again.

The wiper motor just died a few days ago.
Ever done one of those?

I've done the wiper assembly, but not on an S-10 (yet) :)
As far as the fuel pump is concerned, it's my own fault for not changing it when I rebuilt the truck.  There it was, right out in the open, while I cleaned and painted the frame, with the box off.  I'll likely remove the box (again)

Oh yeah, I just changed the EGR valve too.  Must be a common thing. Mine is a 2.8 mini-mouse V6.

The fuel filter is under the power steering pump on mine, fastened to the engine block. Took a while to find it. Removing the steering pump to get at it is simple though.

I just remembered........the grille in front of the windshield, above the wiper assembly, cannot be removed without removing the hood. Been there. If you do it your self, make sure to scribe around the heads of the hood bolts, so that it goes back on without a hassle adjusting it. The hood is easy with a little help and isn't very heavy.

Thanks for the tip.

I may tackle it myself or take it to Charlie's.
Have them do the EGR valve at the same time.

They are cheap and always do great work.

I did enough car mechanics many years ago to last me a life time and it does not thrill me like it used to.

Just paid about $350 to have mine replaced.  Later was told that you don't have to lift the whole bed.  Something like un-bolting it and lifting the front up like a dump truck.  I would have done it myself but it was stupid cold and my garage sucks.  Evidentialy, this is a common S-10 thing.

It's not just an S-10 thing. Every car of truck with fuel injection usually has a tank pump.  I've changed a bunch on cars, and a few on trucks.  Some folks cut an access hole in the bed on trucks, and make a removable cover panel to fit over the hole.  Probably a good idea on an old rusty truck, just to get the job done.

Chopping an access is a good idea!  No reason why it would have to be an ugly hole.  You could use a fancy fuel door thingy and say "Well that for the weekends at the racetrack..."!

Hey Bickster! Funny you should say that.  Today I cut a nice neat cut-out in the bed, over the tank.  I have the new pump in, and I'm making an access panel with a piece of the repair panel that's used for repairing the bed.  LMC truck has those panels, and I had one here that I forgot about.  I'm gonna make it removable. It will be a flush (with the bed) cover when I get it done.
Not only that, the truck even runs now ;D    There is no tee in the fuel line to check with a pressure gauge for pump operation.  I thought about putting a fitting in the line earlier, but with the new pump I'm not gonna do it.
I'll never figure this out......

The advantage of removing the gas tank is that you can clean it while it is off. For the bed hole. just throw a cheap bed liner over it..lol
Not observing amp safety can kill you!
