More Live Setzer madness... Mystery Train
« on: March 17, 2009, 08:35:18 pm »

My gosh, the boy can play....  This one from a Japanese live show, great slap bass too (and drums considering he's playing a cocktail kit standing up!). I contend that he quite possibly might be one of the best Rockabilly players ever. One things for sure, if you listen to a lot of Rockabilly like I do you can here the riffs. Oh hey, that's Gene Vincent from such and such tune etc, he's an encyclopedia of those chops and just runs them off effortlessly (bastard. haha). ;)

Dyna

GREAT player and fabulous entertainer!!!  That would've been a superb show. He looked like he was having fun hamming it up!

Good stuff.  Thanks, Tubenit

Totally agree.  I've never really paid any attention to him until the last few months.  The more I hear and see what he does, the more amazed i become.  A truly great guitarist that I only wish I could emulate.  The guy's flatout amazing.

I hear that... I wonder how original his Bassman's are? He's always got a pair of em, I sure as heck can't afford em, but someday I'm gonna build me one if I have to sell a spleen or something.. Definitely can't afford the space echo either, probably have to settle for one of those SE20 digital recreations which actually sound pretty good, don't matter I ain't got his chops no how... ;D

Speaking of space echo, somebody was making a good clone, but I forget who.  Ibanez makes a descent delay/echo on the cheap.  I had one and got rid of it because it didn't fit my style then, but I'm on the lookout for a good used one now.

Fulltone has a great tape echo, they get if I remember right 1200-1500 bones for it... Its more similar to a echoplex than a space echo though. The digital space echo is still pricey for me at about 230.00 or so.

Well, that's what 200+ gigs a year for 20-30 years does for a guy.

I love to cook, and I like really good cooking shows.  My favorite one is Jacques Pepin.  Watching him use a knife is just inspirational, because his technique is so amazing.  Why?  Well, when he was 13 he started working in French kitchens.  Now, at about 70ish, he doesn't even have to think about what the knife is doing.  It's all about constant repetition.

Brian Setzer has had plenty of repetition at this point.

I've seen him any number of times over the years, and his shows are ALWAYS entertaining.

In the article he talks about writing charts for the band (as in the whole Orchestra), so yeah repetition and a thorough understanding of music. Pure prodigy IMHO, but also well practiced and paid his dues no doubt.

Yeah, there are some clips of lesson-oriented stuff on youtube where you quickly get the feeling he's well grounded in theory.  Of course, you can't just play from your head all the time and nobody will ever believe you if you don't feel what you're playing.  It's clear to me he's definitely feeling it... and all that time in the saddle hasn't hurt him, either.

As for cooking, I dig that, too.  I'd like to be good at it someday, but my hopes at this point aren't all that high.  I've been perfecting my pizza now for the last 30 years or so and I'm only just now getting to the 'acceptable' stage.

I'd like to be able to play like Setzer, as well as others at his level of expertise, but I don't want to devote my entire life to it as he's had to do.
