new dog in the house

 My niece was raising Boxers, and just moved here from Missouri with three pups from the last litter.  Two males and a female, and she gave us our pick. I chose the female, partly because I've mostly had females, except the first Boxer.  She has had all the required shots etc, and is AKC registered.  She normally gets 500 bucks for a pup.  I must be the wrong business.  Anyway this was a freebee for "uncle Bill"  :)  My last one had to be put to sleep two years ago. Tough thing to do.
  We are having lots of fun with the new one :)   The cat hasn't got too close yet, but got along good with the last dog.

Excellent. I have a soft spot for the breed.

My aunt used to breed boxers for a very long time from my early childhood up until a few years ago. Her last Female died last week at age 13 which in near unheard of for that breed. She decided to retire from it as she ages.
All of the pups were incredibly docile, when I was a kid we'd ride some of the larger males like ponies and they'd happily play along with us kids. She had a large number of brindle coated pups from her females and studs...those proved to be popular with buyers. She would be kind enough to give some pups to family. I never took one because I already had a Springer Spaniel and a Cocker Spaniel at the time she was most active in the breeding biz....but I did organize getting one for my next-door-neighbor who was in his 80's. That pup brought a lot of joy to his life...He still outlived the dog, but I think the boxer gave him a good reason to wake up every morning and that kept him going.

My sister just got a great looking boxer a few months ago. She's a nurse at an assisted living home in Minneapolis, one man had this boxer and showed it in dog shows until his health didn't permit it...he didn't want to enter the home because he wanted to be with the dog. My sister is a big dog lover and just lost her Dalmatian to cancer, so she agreed to take this dog in for this man. Since she works at the Assisted Living home, she brings the boxer several times a week for the man to see. It was a good compromise to get the man the help he needed without totally losing his prized dog. My sister also has a Rotweiler and a Bichon Frise for the boxer to play with, she'd have 100 dogs if she could but the city of St. Paul limits her to 3 for good reason....

I like Boxers too, great dogs, except for all the slobbering.  ;D

  The slobbering part is common , but the last two I've had didn't slobber.  Some years back I had a brindle female, who slobbered and drizzled .

  The 13 years for a boxer is unususal.   I had one last for 11 1/2 years.  The average lifespan, from what I hear is only 8 years. My last one was only about 7. Tumors and cancer are the common problems.

  My wife came up with the name "Kanani" which is Hawaiian for "beautiful" :)

 We had a great dane years ago, she was "Sweet Leilani"  :)

  I'll get some pix and get my kid to post them  ( I don't know how!!)

  Only connection is Hawaii itself. We go there frequently, have lots of Hawaiian musician friends there, and even have our youngest son there at U of Hawaii, working on his PHD.
  I've restored a bunch of Rickenbacher steel guitars for my Hawaiian friends. I've played there a few times also.
  That youtube link of Mantovani is nice.  I have some recordings of him.

  Sweet Leilani is a very old tune written by Harry Owens, whose daughter's name was Leilani.
 Since I'm into Hawaiian music, I knew the history of that tune.

 Our new dog is 3 months old already since she wasn't sold sooner.  Kind of wish she would have been like 7 or 8 weeks old, but no big deal.  I just put up a 100 ft cable with the trolley/pulley rig in the back yard for a good area for the dog to run a bit.

My wife and I have a couple of pugs. They require constant attention and aren't that bright, but still a lot of fun. We got the first one, a fawn pug named Mister P, from a shelter about three years ago. He's about 7 years old. Next week he's getting a bunch of teeth pulled out (my wife says Mr. P is getting a new grill). The second one is a female black pug named Ming that we got from a breeder. She was the runt of the litter and had a hernia from her mother biting the umbilical cord too close. Now it's two years later and Ming is healthy, fearless, and could pull a truck. My wife wants to get a third dog, but we don't have much room. She wants to rescue every animal. She heard about a Vietnamese pot belly pig someone was giving away and wanted that, but I told her I'm not walking a pig around the neighborhood.

I had a friend who had a 1958 Harley-Davidson panhead with a sidecar and a boxer named Beauford. Beauford loved to ride in the sidecar. You couldn't ride behind him because he slobbered so much.

My absolute fav place on the planet!  Been there a few times, the last being Kauai in 1993, leaving 2 days before hurricane Iniki tore the island all to hell.  They were filming the first Jurasic Park then and the cast and crew were in the hotel next to us - they got stuck there in the middle of filming with the island shut down.  What a mess.  Honeymooned on Maui in 1986 and another board member from here was there the same week on their honeymoon also!  Small world!  I want to go back and do Oahu again now that the Missouri is at Pearl.  My dad used to play Hawaiian slide when he was a kid back in the '30's.  Hawaiian music was big on the mainland back then.  I grew up listening to all my dad's Hawaiian albums - I love that stuff!  Iz is still one of my favs - of the "newer" music.  I was sad to see him go.

Oahu is the only island I go to, mostly because of Waikiki and the music scene there, and it's where I'm known a bit.  We would like to go to the other islands also sometime though.  Many of the pictures of the old time players had Magnatone amps shown in them. Interesting.  I was told they were furnished for nothing if the players used them.......advertising ya know  :)  Some steel players are using Canopus steel guitars with the same deal.  They sound,,,,OK, but many use Fender Stringmaster steels.  I've re-furbished a few of those for people, and had a D8 (double neck) but didn't like the tone all that well. I still have a D8 called a Dual Pro.  My taste is Rickenbachers, bakelite and aluminum frypans , (A-22)

  Dogs are very enjoyable, but of course can be expensive if heath problems come up.  Some vets seem the think they are working on people, when the make out the bill :(   The last dog cost a bundle for vet bills.
