6G15 Stand alson reverb
« on: May 07, 2009, 03:53:35 pm »
Just a quick newby question, if you dont mind.
Does any on have experience building the Weber 5G15 unit? I have built a pocket amp with op amps and also a SE amp from Dr. Bottlehead. However the SE was a step by step true point to point amp.

I am a little nervous about taking the plunge on the Weber b/c of there only being the layout diagrams.

I do love a tube reverb (I once had a Twin Reverb) but spending over $800 on a reissue Fender unit just seems crazy!

My soldering skills are OK (try soldering a big capacitor on a terminal strip with only two hands sometime!!) it just seems that there is some question as to how to hookup every thing.

So my question is,... based on all of the collected wisdom on these pages do I have much to worry about or should I take the plunge and with all your help i could pull it off.

The 6G15 is a low/medium complexity project, barely more difficult to build than a SE amp.

You should consider the Hoffman version instead of Ted's clone, it's smoother and quieter while retaining the 6G15 "sound".

Use the Weber or Mojo chassis and cab, get your trannies and other compnents from Doug here, get the board from one of the auhorized Hoffman manufacturers (not all of them are on the list BTW). Stir well, enjoy.

Thanks for replying FYL
But I still have questions, (sorry) are the layout of Ted's and Doug's board the same. The reason I am asking is because while I have built amps before my real electronics knowledge is limited. As I said the SE amp had step by step instructions. With the reverb I will be flying solo with only the layout to guide me * and hopefully this forum page and the kindness of strangers!!).
The reason I ask is that on Teds pages the lay out seem clear and that was my major reason for considering it.
I do know from other posts that his selection of parts seems to be questionable. I do understand that Doug lists Switchcraft, Carling and other higher quality parts.
In fact I was considering ordering from both as Ted now offers and buffet style of ordering.

I guess my fear is that I will be in over my head regarding how to hookup every thing with no help available.
But i also must admit that It does not LOOK to complicated.

thanks in advance

michael

Doug's layouts are as clear once enlarged and printed.

Ted Weber shoots for the lowest costs when it comes to iron and passives, most of his components are made in China. Decent quality, low prices, but nothing outstanding.

Doug goes for the same parts you find in high quality amps, his trannies are sourced from some of the best US manufacturers, etc. OK, some of his parts are more expensive, but you only get what you pay for.

There are plenty of people here willing to help, your Hoffman board supplier will also supply instructions and guidance.

I have a question regarding Dougs reverb layout. I dont know if its me but I think there is a mistake on the layout page. Specifically the layout of the choke and output trans. The layout shows the red and blue leads that leave the choke going to pins 3 and 4 of the 6V6n and the black leads going to the large caps. In addition the lay out shows the green and black leads from the output trans going to the output RCA jack for the reverb springs. There are no other leads going to/from the output trans.
Please correct me if I am wrong but doesn't the choke have the 2 black lead that attach to the large caps and the output trans have the red and blue leads that go both to the the 6V6 pins 3 and 4 AND its green and black to the reverb jack?

Eagerly awaiting clarification

The layout is correct but a lil' confusing. The choke goes between the two 40µF filtering caps, it's output goes to the 10K dropping resistor, the OT primary *and* to the 6K6GT/6V6GT screen (pin 4, which Doug also uses as a convenient tie point).

Check the original schemo and layout, everything will be clearer.

THe out put of the choke going to the 40 cap and the 10K resister I see but if you check the diagram it shows a red lead from the choke also going to pin 4. What I am saying is that there is no red and blue lead coming from the choke, only 2 black leads,,right? The red and blue leads come from the OT as well as the black and green which go to the RCA jack for the reverb springs

Hmmm. The red wire comes from the OT primary, not from the choke.

OT connections

pri
RED screen supply (pin 4), choke out, 10K dropping R
BLU plate supply (pin 3)

sec
GRN hot (RCA ctr)
BLK ground (RCA ext)

Exactly!!
But on the beautiful color layout that is not what is shown. in the upper right corner this is a representation of 2 transformers drawn as 2 ovals and the wires from the ovals show and say "Blacks from choke" going to the 40 caps and on the other side of the same oval there are a red and blue lead going to pin 3 & 4.

> in the upper right corner this is a representation of 2 transformers drawn as 2 ovals

The "two ovals" are two holes in the chassis. The High-Voltage wires in one hole, the Low-Voltage wires in the other hole, very safety-conscious.

> on the other side of the same oval there are a red and blue lead going to pin 3 & 4.

These are OT Primary leads.

Red-Red from power transformer goes to bridge rectifier, 300V rough DC is made on 40uFd cap.

That is taken to black-black choke leads, arrives on other 40uFd cap as 295V smooth DC.

295V DC is also fed to G2 (pin 4), and to OT hot lead (Red).

6K6/6V6 sucks current through OT primary via OT Blue lead to Plate (pin 3).

+295V also is tapped via 10K resistor to feed the little stuff (not shown below).

I'm not seeing a mistake in the section shown below.
