Hybrid amps
« on: June 03, 2009, 06:24:31 pm »
I have a couple of Hybrid amps I enjoy. A Kustom 6 valve( deathtrap inside) , and a peavey 80's ClAssic Heritage  with this crazy nealry out of control but very pleasing distortion and super nice lush phaser.
In solid state , Everyone talks about how the age of Digital is to come..,and yet I refuse to believe it.
As far as solid sate circuits and amplifers go..well, in HI-FI- youve got the super expensive Krell and and Levinson designs, and they stack up against most tube amps and outright put them to shame  in terms of sweet sound and quick detailed accuracy, yet they can never reach the warmmth of an old vinatge  high end tube design.
In Guitar amps, its a beast of a diffferent nature. I dont think you can really get the organic tone requisite to great guitar sound from a solid state design, excepting some Jazz sterile cleans.
I do not believe at all in digital in the world of guitar..but solid state Hybrid technology seems to have been abandoned too soon in the frenzy to move to modeling.
I think there is a great  great hybrid solid state pre/tube power guitar design yet to be developed.

I owned a Music Man RD50 112 that was a decent amp in the clean tones.  It had one tube preamp and 6L6's.  Didn't care for the distortion too much.    I heard a old Gibson solid state amp (Lab series) in Nashville that I thought sounded spectacular but the player was fantastic also.

Amp (RD50) was INCREDIBLY loud to me.

With respect, Tubenit

Perhaps.... but there have been SOOOOOO many crappy hybrids.

> sounded spectacular but the player was fantastic also.

The player is more important than the amp.
