Calling all Apple/Mac users!
« on: August 03, 2009, 12:36:31 am »
Ok, I have reached the end of my rope with my pc - the constant upgrades, bugs, blue screens, etc.....  I have played around with my daughter's school computer, which is an Apple.  I have to admit that I really like it.

Soooo, what's the bottom line making the move away from my pc to Mac-land?  Oh, and please spare me the Ford vs. Chevy, pc vs. Apple jokes.  I do not know enough about the Apple platform to be dangerous, so please treat this like a serious question.  I would like to get a desktop, so maybe we can start there?  What do I need?  I tried to let the little Best Buy dork-damn-glad-to-meet-you kid show me a little, but I could not take more than 2 minutes of him wanting to sell me something.

Hmmm, does Mixcraft have an Apple version?  See, this is the kind of "stuff" I need to know.  What pc things will I not be able to do - if any?

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
Jim

Oh, and were is the best place to buy?

I use both Windows and Mac for different things.   I have been the System Administrator at the school I teach at since the beginning of the year. We have ~50 Macs on the network and just a few PCs. (I'm typing this on an HP laptop with Windows Vista, in the morning I'll check it on a Mac PowerBook with OSX 10.5 I use the platforms interchangeably)

Really the main thing is to get used to OSX rather than Windows, there are more similarities than differences in the basic function of the operating systems. Mac always seems more...tactile, (for lack of a better term) in that things are done in a more direct way. For example, you install a program/application by dropping the download or item from it's icon into the "applications" folder as opposed to the windows "installer wizards".

As far as internet browsing goes there is really no advantage Windows over Mac. Unless a site is written specifically for Internet Explorer, which is no longer supported by Microsoft for Mac (this is rare and almost only found for certain official sites (Government, or Corporate. that use encryption, lately I've seen more of these encryption sites using Firefox.). In reality, use Firefox on a mac or PC...it is infinitely better at controlling popup ads and is a "lighter" program than IE.
Macs do have the major advantage of having virtually no malicious software written for them (Virus, Spyware, Adware, Trojan Horses). This is based on the disparity in usage more so than Apple software people being better than Microsoft's. This simple fact alone has made my job a lot easier.....I have all the students use Mac for any internet use. It is as foolproof as a computer can get in this regard.

With software, yes Windows does dominate. There is simply much more software out there for Windows. Look at your usage though...
What do you need? Are you dependent on a program that doesn't have a Mac version or equivalent? Mixcraft does not have a mac version that I know of, however....Macs come with GarageBand which is a very similar bit of software and is very powerful despite it's initial simple appearance.  We've even mandated learning Garage Band in our Middle School music Curriculum. It's been a powerful education tool, we use music to help kids understand computers and vice versa.

Apple has finally permanently solved issues with windows compatibility, All new Macintosh computers are loaded with Intel Dual-Core Processors. That Intel processor can work with both Mac OSX and Windows. So I have a Mac at home that has both Mac OSX v10.5 and Windows XP spII. I have a few at work with this same setup so we can have school records in both formats since students transfer in and out from various districts that use varying computer systems. You do have to buy a copy of windows to run both, but it's really as close to  perfect platform as is commercially available....you can do 95% on the safe and stable (virus wise) Mac Platform, then use Windows for things that are not Mac Supported. Since most of your web usage would be on the mac side, you would greatly reduce odds of malicious software wreaking havoc on your computer.

That said, us Mac System admins are being vigilant. With the popularity of iPod and iPhone from Apple, we are watching for malicious software written for these devices that could potentially infect OSX. So far nothing major has come on the radar.....but I've been installing Anti-Virus Software for the first time on the Mac network to stave off anything that may arise.

There is also the Unix/Linux based crowd. Unix/Linux is powerful and...almost all free of cost, no major virus threat etc. The Caveat is that it isn't commercially supported so if something happens, you're on your own. Which doesn't appeal to most casual computer users. Mac OSX is based upon Unix but not 100% compatible with all the versions of unix/linux that I know of.

If you have files that need to be moved from your PC to a potential new Mac, that has gotten easier as well. For the most part file types have become more generic across all computing platforms (thank the internet for that) Images are often in JPEG or GIF. Audio in MP3, Video in MPEG etc.  These files move across platform without any messy issues like we had 10-12 years ago, when Macs used IMG files and Windows used BMP files for pictures, these weren't easily shared. If you use a program like Microsoft office for word processing or spreadsheet etc....there is a mac version and the files will move over and open in the mac version.  (also check out freeware MS-office compatible programs called abi-word or Open Office, it has both mac and windows versions)

You can first try a dual boot install with Ubuntu to see how it works on your machine.

www.ubuntu.com

You'll have to download the live CD image and cut a DVD, then install from there.
In the install, partition the disk so that part is your old Windows OS and part is
your new Ubuntu.

But it's free, stable and works great.  And hopefully there are drivers for your
video and sound hardware on your computer.  If not, no loss.

I've been running it for over a year and I will never, ever pay for an OS again.
I will be swift.  And merciful.

Ritchie200--

I have 5 operating mac's--the one I like best is my 24" imac OS 10.5xx--My wife has two PC  laptops--I catch her on the Mac I bought her for the internet.  She  uses the laptops to play solitaire.  Music and graphics, have long been top notch with studios and the printing industry. Quark Express is the best  multitask application I have ever  used--but expensive. I use an older computer--imac G4 for Quark Publishing and word processsing.

I started with PC's, but now it's mac's for me.  Much easier to use.

Sure, why not buy a Mac.
Resale is excellent.

Make sure you get Garage Band with the OS.
Mac Minis are a pretty good deal now but be sure you have one of the newer ones with the "audio in".( I think they are the Intel models?)
The early Mini models didn't have it so you were force to buy some sort of USB or Firewire audio box. :(

The thing I have always liked about Mac is the intuitiveness about them, even all the way back to the days of the Apple SE.
It always ends up like this for me;
"hmm, I wonder. If I drag this over here and.............. "
Sure enough, it works!

Nothing really dangerous about the OS AFAIC, especially when compared to a PC.

Maybe it wasn't mentioned.
You can load up a copy of your entire OS on an external drive and run it on any other compatible Mac via USB/Firewire.
Or, you can just copy.........oh nothing.

Plus, basically I have found anything you plug into it will either work..... or not within the first 5 seconds.
No screwing around.
Just feels friendlier, for a lack of terms here.

Hey all, thank you for taking the time to give me your views on the Mac and alternatives.  As much as I would like to try some of the other options, this will be for my wife and kids.  If ANYTHING were to go wrong and I was not there to fix it, I would be sleeping in the garage!  I will get this computer when we get the new one, so I may just try a few new things!

Is there any particular site or store that has good prices on the Mac?

THanks again!

if either of you are educators, then you likely qualify for a small discount, otherwise and  usually you pay full pop for a mac. apple has very strict franchise rules. maybe you have a friend/relative that does work in education?

Just go to the Apple site and order.
The usually throw in shipping for free to your door step.
If there is a student in your home or you are an educator, you can find some extra deals.

Here is what I'd do.
Order one.
They will hound you if you want the extended service warranty.
Don't take it because you are covered for the first year for free anyway.
Then at the 11th month sign up for the 3 year plan( I think it's like $200 or something)
There, you have 4 years not to worry, basically.

This is off the top of my head, check for yourself.....things may have changed.

Richie200--

The mac tech people even come to your home to repair--I get the extended warranty--only  once in 19  years have I  had any  problem with my mac's.  I've had a lot of PC's and had trouble with all of them.

I  went  to Crafters of  Tennessee in Nashville--They  build custom mandolins ($17,000), banjos, and guitars. They have the new 24" imac doing  the CRC layout and programs.

Thanks ISO and Madison - most days are an education in frustration, but I guess that does not count!

Thanks for the heads up on the warrantee deal, I will read the fine print!

THanks again everyone!

Mackie, yeah I came from a manufacturing background.  There are quite a few CAD/CAM programs using the Mac.  Back in the day (my day, that is!) AutoLaugh and CADKey were the only sheriffs in town - things have certainly changed!

IF you go the *nix route (BSD or Linux flavor) you have an advantage of the knowledge of the hardware of the PC with only a different OS. (Running the Open Source? version of OS-X should work too... now running OS-X itself, Apple may have problems with.) Mac, well proprietary hardware and OS, less easy for a DIY guy to fix. IF you got a spare PC laying around, you can start playing with the *nix OS for free now before you launch it on the family.

I recently found out there is now a package manager for the Mac (they are a free software version manager that we Linux goons like to use to find, download and install the correct versions of any kind of software).  Since the Mac is Unix now it can run a lot of stuff.  Enjoy!

Well, I am typing this on my new iMac 27 inch 16:9 widescreen.....as my daughters would say, O...M....G!!!!!!!!  Why did I not do this years ago!  This thing is so cool.  There are so many oh so neat features.  I have all my widgets set up.  The thing is blazing fast and I can't wait to try my M-Audio USB interface on this machine.  Garage Band looks pretty simple.  I do wish my Mixcraft would work on this thing...  The graphics....WOW!

I have been blessed this Christmas!  Thank you again everyone!

Glad you're enjoying the Mac. You can run Windows apps using either Bootcamp or Parallels (an additional purchase). Buy Windows, setup Bootcamp or Parallels, install Windows, then install your Windows apps. I use Parallels and it allows you to run Windows and Mac OS at the same time. PM me if you want to discuss.

Happy New Year!

Very cool Richie!

Funny, I just bought the wife a 17" Macbook Pro used.
Man......the real estate is nice on that machine.....make mine look tiny.

Have a great time.

I am going to check into Parallels, sounds interesting.

Cheers.

Here's the link for Parallels:

http://www.parallels.com/products/desktop/

The latest version is $80 (220 MB download; boxed version also available) and you can sign up for a free trial. Although I haven't tried it yet, you can also run Linux in a virtual machine.

Pete,
Why the heck would I want to go back to THAT hell!!!    Har!  Thanks, but I'll strip all the programs out of my old machine and just run Mixcraft and a few others on it.  I also bought the "training" package at the local Apple store.  Looked like a pretty good deal and that will keep my wife happy too.  I am now a certified Apple junkie!!!

Thank you again everyone for your input!

I hear ya, Jim!

I'm stuck and need to live in both worlds. My MacBook made so much more sense than a Windows-only notebook, I decided to go that route and run both OS's and retire my old tower Mac. For business use, I now have a portable Windows 'puter and a Mac.

Might have to check out Mixcraft one of these days. I just got Transcribe
http://www.seventhstring.com/xscribe/overview.html?a=48
and need invest some time in figuring out how to get the best out of it.
