More CNC fun
« on: August 14, 2009, 12:17:33 pm »
I am going out to Utah in a couple weeks and needed to have my handheld GPS in the rental car, as well as on the trails.

I could not find a suction cup GPS holder that I liked and so I made one.
I came out pretty nice thanks to Cambam

Way more details and larger pics on this page.

That looks great Doug. The antenna should work good there too..  I've installed a lot of GPS rigs in airplanes, the panel-mounted moving-map type (big bucks) and the antenna permanently mounted on the top of the cabin.
You seem to have fun with your CNC set up
I'll never figure this out......

Why the compass

I had them both on my boat

GPS= CLOCK=KNOTS PER HOUR=DIRECTION

Man overboard button so you can come back into the chum slik

Bill,
I have a plug in external antennea that has a 8 foot cord.
It has a magnet on it that sticks to the car roof.
It gets awesome reception.
So much so that you can have the GPS in a bag inside the car and it still works.

The compass is in my truck, in my driveway, not the rental car in Utah.
The GPS has a compass in it if you need one.

That sounds great.  I've also installed just the antenna on the cabin top, with a jack for the portable hand-held GPS units.  Folks with the panel mounted units also like a hand-held portable as a back up for instrument flight conditions.
I'll never figure this out......

My hand held one has kind of a tiny screen, Not really a good automobile GPS.

We are also bringing Ginny's Magellan, which is a regular automobile GPS unit.

The cool thing I use mine for is that is hooks to my Notebook computer via a USB cable and then sync's up with Ozi Explorer (My mapping software) to do regular moving map type stuff.

All the maps I use in Ozi scroll across the screen similar to how an auto GPS does, but the maps also show all the tracks and waypoints and custom data I have loaded in Ozi Explorer.
I can set a proximity alarm to go off when we get near something that you want to stop and look at.

I use topo maps and satellite maps from terra server in Ozi.
Wish that Google Earth was not $400 for the version that lets you use a GPS with it.
