Seeking recommendations for my '63 Vibroverb Clone
« on: August 17, 2009, 09:12:40 pm »
Oxford.  Jensen.  Weber.  Fender "Special Design."  Ceramic; Alnico.  No dope; light dope.  I feel like a dope!
Apparently the original (and 1990s reissue) came equipped with Oxford ceramic speakers.
I've seen others with Jensen ceramic or Alnico retrofits, as well as with Weber ceramic and Alnico speakers.  Oh, and there's the price difference between Weber's Sig series and the 10A125's.  Ben told me the difference, but that was over a year ago, and I can't remember his explanation, my project has been temporarily interrupted.
I don't believe I'd be able to tell the difference between ceramic and Alnico, without perhaps road-testing a Super Reverb.  Good idea?  Then I'd be comparing it to my DRRI with a Weber 12F150-B.
I don't have the time nor $$ to order some, try them, send back for refund, etc.  Any suggestions to alleviate my frustration would be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards.

I put two each of 10F150-T and 10A125 in a recent Super Reverb build.  Knowing what the 10F150-T sounds like from several other builds, the 10A125 added something nice - slightly less defined but not mushy?  IIRC Ted Weber recommended the 10A125s with light dope (the Normal channel was 6G16-ish).  You CAN hear the difference between a ceramic driver and alnico.  Remember that the alnico speakers are much bigger too.

Can't speak to any of the others.

Chip,
Thanks for the reply.  I couldn't tell from Weber's site exactly what the "T" in your speaker model means.  I'll have to find a BFSR to road test for myself to hear the difference.
Best regards.

Ok, what about cabinet recommendations.  Mike Marsh?  Weber?  This guy:

Any others out there worth considering?

I'm considering cab and chassis from Mike Marsh, and the guts from Weber.

Thanks in advance.

This guy is JD Newell. Really nice cabs, excellent workmanship, decent prices. Very tight tolerances, which can be a problem with some chassis.

Marsh resells Mojo cabs, high quality etc. but 20 to 30% more expensive than Newell.

The best repros I've seen come from Larry Rodgers at Rodgers Amps.
