12-string electric

Somewhat on a lark, I decided to throw together a 12-string electric for myself.  I just finished it (well, almost - I need to make another nut for it) tonight, and I think this thing ROCKS!  So far, everyone under 50 who has seen it loves it, and everyone over hates it.  To me, a pink 12-string electric with Filtertron clones (TV Jones TV Classics) is just too damn cool for words.  

And no, I've not played Mr. Tambourine Man on it.  I was going to, and then I listened to it and discovered that song sucks.

Maple neck with an ebony fingerboard.  The body is alder.  It my Surf model guitar, which I'm only just starting to make, which is why they aren't on the website quite yet.  Soon, though.

Thank you.  Yes, I made everything - well, I got the pickups from TV Jones, and the hardware is all from Gotoh, but other than that...

Heck I like the pink that guitar and I am not very young!  The bright white pearloid pickguard really sets it off.  Looks like a 12 string that is worth the tuning effort.

I like it.  I've been playing it a lot, though my hands are starting to hurt a bit.  I think I need to split my time with my six string a bit more!

I played a lot of electric 12 in a band that I was in 8-10 years ago....We played some weird stuff so I'd layer on some chorus and delay with the jangly 12 string and either a Fender Silverface Bassman or Blackface Bandmaster. I played one of those Ovation solidbodies from the late 70's. Fortunately this one had a doublecut body like an LPjr. rather than that weird meatcleaver looking thing that they called the "Breadwinner."

Well, Fender and Mosrite are some of my favorite guitars, so I do tend to be influenced by them a fair bit, but I never wanted to make exact copies of anyone else's guitars.

I actually quite like the Breadwinner body - I just wish the workmanship hadn't been so dodgy.  They are a very comfortable body to hold.  If you look at Steve Klein's ergonomic electrics, the bodies are Breadwinners, and those things are REALLY well made.  Everyone I know who has played one loves it.  So, I think the big problem with the Breadwinner was just that they were badly made, not that they were a bad idea.

But yes, my 12-string is a blast to play.  A lot of Beatles and George Harrison stuff just seems to flow out of it.

Awesome!  But I'm afraid that to really go with this guitar, it would have to be pink with white, not black.

What's on the inside, though?  Because, of course, that's at least as important as what's on the outside.  Right?

Nothing too fancy on the inside of that amp.  It's an AA764 Vibro-Champ with a 6L6, footswitchable Raw control and VVR - power tube only.

It's for a girrrl.  She like pink.  Oh, it's got a pink LED indicator light too!

It's not really tolex - it's vinyl that has texture, but it much smoother than traditional tolex.  I get it at yourautotrim.com

They have a big selection of marine, automotive and restaurant/hospital use vinyls.  Lots of fun options there.
