Princeton Reverb in DR cab

I recently built myself a PR to put in my DR size cab with single 12" RI JEnsen P12N.  I really like it, but the speaker has a little too much low end.  I'm not using it in a cranked up application but for clean-to-mild-breakup with a tele playing classic country tunes.  I'm not really too keen on using different cap values and all that, just want to keep it stock values but think a speaker swap is the solution I'm looking for. 

Any recommendations for a speaker with nice top sparkle and chime like the P12N has, but a little less full on the bottom end? 

Oh yeah, the baffle is plywood.  Would particle board impart less bass frequencies?

I've owned both those speakers and liked them and thought they had a nice articulate highs still with a solid bass tone.

Other choices - EMI: Red, White & Blues; OR Screamin Eagle.  However, the latter may have too little low end.  I'm using a Red, White & Blues in my Princeton (enlaraged baffle hole) and love it.  There's a Screamin Eagle in my Silvertone 1482 to brighten a dark amp; but then I had to raise the value of the cathode bypass cap for more bass!

Had a customer's SFPR in for all new pots, and we put it side by side for comparison with mine.  We plugged my chassis into his original cab and you'd swear it was his amp.  Vice-versa and not surprisingly, his amp sounded more DR-like plugged into my cab.

The only other speaker I had laying around was this Weber Silver Bell, which hardly seemed like a good choice since I think it's intended to be "brit" voiced.  Still, had to try it.  We both agreed, my amp still sounds bigger than his SF with the Weber, but the huge bottom end was gone and it sounds more like the real thing.  I did notice that I have to turn the treble knob up a little more with this speaker, although at practice it seemed plenty present in the small room.  We'll see what it's like mic'ed up tomorrow in a big room.

You might want to consider making a 2x10 baffle for that cab.  I have a beat late SF  DR cab that I am cutting the glued in baffle out of to do that.  Plenty of room too even with a DR chassis to do that.

PR's are massive thru a 2x10.  I have a couple different 2x10 boxes and they just are tits with the PR driving.  You'll throw rocks at any 1x12 after you hear that thing thru a 2x10.

Success!  I only brought the PR last night (I usually A/B/Y two amps) with the weber silver bell and couldn't have been happier with the tone.

That said, I see nothing wrong with taking your suggestion, Charlie, since I do have a 2x10 baffle for this cab.  But no speakers, so which ones do you suggest?  I'm thinking two dissimilar, like an alnico and a ceramic.  Or maybe both ceramic, but just different models like weber's 10F125 and 10F125-O?

So I will need 16 ohm speakers parallel, or 4 ohm in series since the PR transformer only has 8 ohm tap.  I think the most common way it's done would be the 16 ohm wired in parallel.  Is that right?  I guess my question is which is the preferred way, or does it even matter?

Massive meaning lots of low end, or just punchier?  The huge bottom is what I didn't like, and the silver bell was perfect compared to the jensen C12N.

First the massive piece just means BIG when its cranked.  You'd never know it was a little PR doing that hahaahaha
The two 2x10 boxes I have are different sizes and different speakers, but both closed cabs.  The big box has a pair or reconed 60's Emmi alnicos - reconed as 4ohm and wired in series for 8ohm.  The smaller box has a pair of 8ohm Emmi alnico Legends wired parallel for 4ohm.  This is not a problem for the PR OT at all.  Doesn't even get warm cranked for however long.  The boxes sound nearly identical, and the only difference in use is that I run the big one (8ohm) alone, and the small one in the 2nd speaker jack for about 6ohm, tho the box gets most of the meat.  There is a Weber Signature ceramic 50watt in the amp cab.  I like 'em both so much that I don't really care which one is plugged in.

I have a few G10L35's sitting here and I'm thinking that the PR in the DR cab like get a couple of those for starters.  Kinda like a little SuperReverb hahaha

The guys over on the Weber board coupld prolly give you some hints on the best 10" Webers.

FWIW I put a pair each of Weber 10A125 and 10F150-T speakers in a Super Reverb build and the tone is fantastic - classic Blackface Fender IMHO. 

A 10A150-T with a 10F150-T might give you even less low end.  IMHO mixing two different speakers will give you more dimension to your sound (if that makes any sense).  Mixing an alnico with a ceramic seems to be pretty popular.  They do sound different, with the alnico breaking up more gradually.

Question for Charlie - Have you ever tried the PR with two 8ohm 12's in series? How'd you like it? How'd your PR like it?

I just tried it with my recently built Hoffman boarded PR and I was amazed at how huge it sounded... seems to be touch responsive too. Doesn't even get the trannys hot, the PT was warm to the touch and the OT was not even warm. It's got an Allen Heyboer PT and a Weber DR OT. Using JJ 6V6's one old Fender 12AX7 in socket 1 and the rest are EH branded. Speakers are a Weber 12F150 50 watt and a Carvin GS12-75-8 made in the Celestion plant. I can't turn it up past 2 or it'll blow my ears out. And that goes for an 8 ohm load too. These little guys are powerful. I'm running it bias for 11 watts. 423v x 26 ma. I'm going to have to sell it or I'll end up totally deaf. LOL

I had it in an original Fender PR cab with an Eminence legend 10 and it was really ballsy too. In that cab the bass was really strong and tight and the mids and highs pretty balanced. I tend to think the 10 inch speakers have more pronounced bass response.

I'm starting to think this PR could run a full stack without breaking a sweat. Anyway, I like the sound of the PR with the 2 12's Im running. Really sweet clean sounds too. The weber can get a little ice picky, so I roll the tone down a touch.
