Get piping **very** straight
« on: October 11, 2009, 05:41:49 pm »
Hey all, anyone have any tips for getting piping "perfectly" straight on a baffle board?  I am talking about the staple on, tadpole kind of piping.  Mine's pretty good, but I am looking for perfection.  I am starting to think of some kinda jig...

thanks
TON

I'm not sure if this applies to the kind of cabinet you're building but here's how I do mine, as can be seen on this example:
http://i32.tinypic.com/4kek2e.jpg

The front panel has a 1/4" roundover routed around the outside edge. I clamp a scrap board to the front of the panel, extending past the edge so it forms a "wall" flush with the front of the panel.  Then I position the piping up against the "wall" when I staple it so it lies flush with the front.  I put slight tension on the piping lengthwise as I work along it so it stays tight/straight.

I'm referring to the piping along the outside edge of the panel that picture. The two vertical white "string" are recessed in 3/32" groove in the panel.

Hey boots, thanks for the reply.  That's exactly what I am talking about.  I was thinking along those lines, but was getting way too complicated.  I like your suggestion.

BTW - great looking amp!

For your grove piping, it is glued in or just stapled either end?

Thanks!

The stuff in the groove is just pulled tight and stapled on the back-side. It's pretty snug in the groove, so I haven't used glue on any of 'em yet.  I've done this on probably six or eight cabs... so far so good!

Great!  It's nice to be on the "giving" end of good advice for a change.  I'm glad it worked for ya.

Thanks Sir Duke!

That one is sold, but I can build another if you're interested.

Here are some clips of it, done by a friend of mine:

Hi Boots

That is one nice looking amp!

Question.
Did you make the faceplate yourself?

Thanks, yes I did.

It's a pretty simple process.  I explain it in this thread about halfway down the page:
