Running 5v relay and 2 LEDs off a 5vac / BR setup
« on: October 26, 2009, 06:37:30 pm »
So I am getting ready for my next build and I plan to switch the boost ckt with Doug's relay (5vdc) and also run 2 LEDs (one for power, the other for boost indicator).   My power supply is based on Doug's relay pages.  I am concerned that maybe I might not have enough voltage to do all this.    I have tested the ckt using a 5vac transformer and 2 LEDs each with 180Ω current dropping resistors.   Using this config I have about 6.5vdc on the output side of the 2nd filter cap (note I am only using 100Ω instead of the 180Ω resistor in Doug's layout.  I have not hooked up the relay for this test, only the filter caps and 2 LEDs.   Will the relay load up the ckt to the point where the voltage drops under 5vdc when it is installed?

Thx

All depends on how much current your relay(s) will draw.  Look at the specs.  Your LEDs will draw maybe 10mA each.  If you are taking it from the heater circuit, then simply add up all your heater current from the tubes, add in the current from the relays and LEDs.

The easiest way to tell is to simply hook it all up and see.  Unless your have a real anemic PT or mondo relays you probably wont have an issue.

I don't know how much current Doug's relays draw..

Your LEDs will draw maybe 10mA each

Wont the voltage drop across the LEDs decrease the available dc that can be used for the relay?

I have it all hooked up except the relay... I  have never worked with them and was not sure it is ok to connect the pwr to the relay just for test purposes.

Thx

Edit - I did some checking - Looks like the relay uses 200ma of current.

Yes.

If voltage is low, it just won't clack; no harm done.

If voltage is high, it will get hot and burn up. Most small relays are rated for 150% voltage forever. At 200% voltage it will take many-many seconds for the smoke to come out. You have time to read your volt meter, and don't panic if it is a little high.
