Self Control
« on: November 22, 2009, 10:38:46 am »
I have gone into weirdo land again with this one.
I started messing with an Arp synth and found some cool sounds.
One of the sounds I liked, sounds like the Arp is belching.

This tune is from the early 80's and was done by Laura Branigan.
I always liked this tune and it got stuck in my head over the years.
The only way to get it out is to mangle it and play it till I'm sick of it.

The solo is courtesy of Highlands brewing company.
Let that be a lesson kids, never drink and solo.

This tune features Larry the belching Arp

Cool tune!!  I liked it. Your recording and playing sure gets some great sounds!

Did you notice that your Steamboat Willie boogies down in EXACT time with the music!!! At least, it did on my computer.

Hey Doug, glad you've got things under control there!  another very cool tune.

How do you get all your mixes sounding so spacious?  Do you use some sort of mastering plug-in?

I still think the Factory tops the list as far as weirdo land in a good way.

Glad you're getting some time to play again.  ALways love to hear what you come up with.  Craig

Don't know exactly. No plug ins, just what is available in Mixcraft4

I always have muliple tracks for the main sounds
I usually have two tracks that are panned left and right a certain amount.

Sometimes the two tracks are the same wav file and sometimes they are harmonies of the main sound.

For example, the piano was two tracks panned hard 100% left and right
Some guitar tracks are two tracks panned 50% left and 50% right
Some dual tracks are 25% both ways
Some are right down the center.

I really don't know what I am doing, I just start moving sliders and knobs around in Mixcraft and see what sounds good to me.
I tend to have a huge wall of sounds, not very sparce for sure.
I like songs that have a ton of little things going on. More fun for my brain I guess.

Also, my guitar sounds come from guitar rig in a real stereo format, so those sounds may have something to do with it all.
I love the PsychoAcoustic delay rack effect in Guitar Rig.

If I actually knew what I was doing I would be dangerous.

Very nice.  Satch has nothing on you!  ;)

I like the synth sounds very much.  Seems like all the "demo" sounds I hear are over the top; I like the softer, richer synths.
I will be swift.  And merciful.

Thanks Tim
You gonna finish up that tune of yours?
That was a really good progression.
I just let it play in a the background for a long time, wishing there was more of it.

I'm a big fan of electronic music.
It's really fun to create this kind of stuff in Mixcraft4 using Midi.
I got a small midi controller keyboard a while back that I can peck on to try and figure out where the notes are placed and how long they should be in duration. After I peck out a riff, I look at the midi and then move things around so they are in time, etc.

If you can find a decent midi file on the web, you can take some of the parts and make them your own.
Some midi tunes you find on the web are horrible and some are done really nice.

Yeah, I'll try to fill it out in the next week.

I like guitar over synth instrumentals a la Gilmour and Jeff Beck.  It really seems to work.  Of course you could argue that Pipeline, with electric piano, was an early version.

The synths really seem to add some sort of cool balance to the mix.
Funky bass is killa.
Good tune!

Thanks mang,
I ripped this short section of Larry the Arp in action
I used Larry instead of a bass guitar on the tune.

Here's a bit of Larry the Arp In Action on track #22 and 23
