 axiom champ OT

Has anyone got one of these ot's? I just got one and it is very small. Smaller than any OT i've ever seen in a champ. It only about 1" square. Are these supposed to be exact relica's?

I got it directly from mercury magnetics who make the axiom tone clones

I can't say anything about that particular tranny except that I have a Gibson GA-8 with an OT about that size that's push pull class A. Great sounding amp. I can say this: I've bought trannies from a number of places and have been generally happy with all of them. The Mercury Mags, however, have been the best, in my opinion.

Have you asked Mercury? On their web page they encourage us to "phone, fax or email".
I would expect replacement parts to be the same physical size as the originals and mount the same as the originals.

I emailed them twice and no response. But i am sure its probably the right one. Then again the mounting holes don't match up with any chassis holes in the original amp...hhhmmm

 I have one, it's definately not 1" x 1".

My guess is: 1.25" x 1.75"

Unfortunately I lent the amp to my cousin so I can't measure it for you.

 Axiom OT for champ
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There's a few different Tone Clone output transformers for the Champ. I built a 5c1 based on the Fender schematic. The preamp tube is an octal 6sj7. The PT and OT are both Tone Clones. The OT is very small complared to my SF Champ OT. For the early Tweeds Tone Clone had two different OT's. I picked the smaller one so I would have something different than the SF. Cranked at 10 it puts out decent volume with a lot of distortion. Perfect for living room solos. Melody work it's great, rhythm playing it sucks. Jst my two cents.

It is a 1960 tweed champ OT.

Scole 90, that is quite a difference in size.
Since i paid an arm an a leg for this transformer i just want it to be accurate to the original. To ship it to Canada i was dinged with a $50 for some border brokerage fee. I've never been charged this for any other item that was shipped to me from the US.

Tonight I'll see what my 5c1 OT says on it and measure it.

It's an FTCO-6, 4ohm. 1 7/16" across the top. If that's what you have, then you have a very early Champ OT.

The FTCO-6 is the early 60's OT and the FTCO-5 is the early 50's OT. I have the former which Mercury Magnetics just confirmed the dims for me which is the same as you mentioned. This is what they said for anyone who'd like to know:
"The Axiom transformers are cloned from original, vintage pieces that we have rewound for other customers. Our Axiom list is quite extensive because Fender did not use the same tranny in the same amp every time"
The reason why i'm being so anal about this is because i'd like to start with something as close to the original as possible for a reference point. Then from there i can see how other transformers compare. The first champ i built used a huge 10watt single ended hammond. That amp had the coolest "woman tone" when cranked with a les paul. I'm sure the new clone OT will yeild a different tone altogether.

You were dinged GST and an inflated UPS or Fedex brokerage charge which is absolutely ridiculous. I wish MM would ship postal on small items much cheaper that way. Larger value it's safer to go UPS or Fedex things take forever with Canada Post and customs.

Jeff, I asked Mercury magnets about shipping USPS to Canada. This is what they said.

"Sorry, we do not offer USPS shipping. Fed Ex or USP only. The best we can do is put a smaller value on the invoice that goes with your order and mail you the real invoice.

Also, have you checked into the NAFTA paperwork? Some of my other Canadian customers fill out special paperwork and they do not pay the huge customs and duty taxes."

I will have to look into the NAFTA thing.

I had talked with MM before purchasing my OT. I recall they said the smaller of the two tweed OT's was better for the early 50's schematic. Fender should've included transformer part numbers on their layouts or schematics. Thanks for the info.

Robert
