NS Mullard EL84 Reissue
« on: January 30, 2010, 05:23:20 pm »
Just popped a pair in my amp and played for about 10 minutes and I really like them so far. Rich, creamy, and smooth is how I would describe them. Great low end and really nice high end definition. Had JJ's in previously and they always sounded a bit harsh and brittle to my ears.

I'm having some folks over tonight for a jam session so I'll let you all know what I think about them after some extended "real life" use. I'll be playing strats, teles, LP's etc., so I should be able to see how they do with single coils vs. humbuckers.

Anyone else have any opinion/experience with these tubes?

Nice tubes, but you can get as good or better results with 6P14P-EV's.

I've been thinking about using the 6p14-ev's and 6n2p's in my next build.  My only concern is they draw more current than el84's and 12ax7's.  Here are some specs I found:

http://www.russiantubes.com/prop.php?t=12&p=245
http://www.russiantubes.com/prop.php?t=12&p=246
http://www.russiantubes.com/prop.php?t=12&p=197
I think I'm probably ok with the 6n2p-er.

What changes to a power supply and or transformer would I have to make to use these tubes in a 18wattish type circuit?

pax,
neon

None......the filament draw is the same, the Russians are simply giving a "range" of acceptable (within spec/tolerance) currents, vs the old standard "this tube draws 750mA".

Hmmm. As good as any promo blurb disguised as a comparative test.
