Awesomeness, your name is P-Bass!
« on: April 13, 2010, 11:37:31 pm »
I just finished this tonight.  Well, not finished - it still needs setup - but I got it far enough that I spent about 2 hours playing it.  Its WAY fun.

And yes, its got flat wounds.  I have not yet put a sponge under the strings, but I'll be getting around to it as soon as it comes home.  I think I'm going to have to make myself a B-15 for it!

Ash body, cheap (but good) maple/rosewood neck, a cool as heck anodized aluminum pickguard, and a Lindy Fralin P-bass pickup which is KILLER.  I need to order a finger rest for it, since the guard already has the holes for them.

I've discovered a problem with flat wound strings.

I haven't been playing enough lately, so my calluses suck.  Well, the flat wound bass strings don't rip up the ends of my fingers like round wounds would, so I didn't notice how long I'd been playing last night, and now my hands are aching like mad!

This thing is funky, though!  It totally has the sound I was after.

Cool bass.  Since bass is not my prime instrument, I just have a cheapo yamaha.  Your project makes me want to move up to (at least) a warmoth or all-parts bass.

I love the Fralin stuff.  I got em in my strat and '56 LP.

Flatwounds are too fun.  I love em on my jazz box as well, just a slidin' around.

Its not a great picture, but this shot makes me happy!

The thing to remember, of course, is that because of the business, and because of the shop, I can throw one of these things together really cheap.  For most people, they are a lot more expensive.  Because of that, this is my version of a cheap Yamaha (or Ibanez, or whatever) bass.  I can say this, though - I can't think of any reason I would ever need another bass.  This thing just has That Sound.  It took Leo a few tries, but the classic P-Bass really is just about a perfect design.

Nice pair!

I love the Fralin stuff.  Ditto.
