Keep frying regulators
« on: April 16, 2010, 08:20:44 pm »
I have a small LED light circuit in my amp that takes approx 16V DC from a voltage doubler circuit, then runs it thru an LM7812. The LED lights consume about 130mA.  I keep frying regulators.  I am pretty sure its because I am too heavy handed with the solder iron.  OK so I can fix that.

So is there anyway I can easily test the regulator out of circuit before I toss it in the bin?

No. 130ma is a LOT of current for a 'small' LED. You do have a series resistor with the LED, right?
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

Its a strip of LEDs http://ca.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Optek/OVQ12S30WW7/?qs=agb4oTp1Mj%2fOz2iBqNdyew%3d%3d

After a further look I see that I had the circuit board miss wired (argghh).  Hopefully I did not fry - and yet another reg!
