Van Halen - Dirty Movies attn GroundHog Ken
« on: June 13, 2010, 01:15:22 pm »
Hey Ken,
I remember you saying that you liked Eddies tone on Fair Warning and it's my favorite Eddie tone also.
He has such a smooth style on that album and a really cool darkish tone that I really like.

Anywho, I was messing around with Dirty movies from the Fair Warning album.
Got some bits recorded and then I realized.

I can't play like Eddie and there is no way I can finish this tune.

This is as far as I got before I woke up.

You can play it here without downloading it

Nice job, Doug.

I like each of the first four Van Halen albums.  Fair Warning was he first one where I was waiting at the record store the day it was released.  (Umm, before then I was too young to have a driver's license.)

When I was a senior in high school, our chemistry teacher used to let us crank tunes during labs.  Fair Warning got a lot of play.

It's amazing how complex and intricate guitar tracks were back then.   Nowadays people just chunk out chords on the bottom three strings and cover it with angsty lyrics.  What artistry.

I never thought Van Halen were great song writers, but Fair Warning had some legit tunes on it like Hear About It Later and So This Is Love.  And the guitar work amazing--not as flashy as the first album--but Fair Warning had better songs without losing the party band vibe.

Wow, you are pretty ambitious attempting that tune!
Sounds good so far.

I had to revisit that CD.
Pretty darn complex what Ed is up to with the geetar parts and effects.

I liked Fair Warning for all the other reasons you guys do plus, they actually allowed Michael Anthony to play more than 3 notes on bass.
Not like he was any threat to upstage Eddie or Dave.

My ambition has run out

The way Eddie plays stuff is just so off the wall and foreign to me.
It almost seems like he plays out of time sometimes and squeezes notes into areas in really odd ways

I don't have the desire to sit and learn a tune that I will probably never play again after recording it.

That bit I did record was a learning experience though.
Had to play the tune at 1/2 speed to figure out what he was playing.
