NOS capacitor : How to test.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've come across a box of old but not used components. (Its actually from a "Technichal Scool- study home... kind of) Lots of goodies there!!! But what about the caps? (Not elektrolyts)
Some om them would be fine in my "new" amp. 0,1uF 630V
They behave alright by "ohming " them, just a fast dip and then open circuit.

Should I avoid them, or test them with 400V DC ???

thanks in advance

 My observations...

Some non-electrolytic caps might get kind of crumbly over time and fall apart, I have seen this with the brown caps used in Fender amps, but I also have seen really old caps that were still in good shape. Probably the are not as good as new ones, more leaky, more out of specs and so on as the manufacturing practice has improved over time. But I think that does not mean that you could'nt use the in a built with a terrific sound.

I also realized that older parts tend to have oxidized leads, (the tine covering is more gray then shiny) ore the leads are dirty and stick as they seem to attract all kind of dust. That brings some trouble for good solder joints and they have to bee cleaned carefully before using them.
