6550 advise
« on: June 22, 2010, 01:25:55 pm »
Well I've come full circle now. My original post here was asking about a schematic for a Sunn Sceptre with mid boost. Now I need to buy a pair of 6550s for the Sceptre and would appreciate some recommendations on some decent current production tubes. The last I bought were GEs back in the '70s.

I'm also curious about trying some EL34s. The Sunn Solarus ran EL34s but at a lower plate voltage. B+ from my recto is 515vdc. Any comments? Here's my schematic...

http://home.comcast.net/~seluckey/sunn/sunn_sceptre_1971.pdf

Thanks for any comments.

Steve--

A friend of mine uses Tungsol 6550's in his McIntosh tube amp CLONES--I used a set a while back in a SUNN BASS amp--Don't remember the Model--They're OK.

I have a set of Tungsol KT66's that sound good.

Nothing technical to pass along.

Don't think of the FAA much after 16 years retired--

The Svetlana SED =C= 6550C works very nicely in Dyna-style amps. Other Russian versions from New Sensor - EH, Svetlana S, etc. - are also well worth considering, as are various KT88's from SED, EH, Shuguang and JJ.

I have tried some 6550 recently in 4 different builds:

Plexi + Hoffman's hot switch, Orange 80 (using both P.I. - A.C. concertina and D.C. concertina), *umble style O.R., Hoffman AB763

I tried the following manufactures:

G.E. 6550A, Winged "C" 6550, China 6550A, sovtek 6550 metal base, JJ KT88/6550.

G.E. was used as reference for subjective listening test.
Between all them, G.E. was clearly the most clean tube, offered highest headroom and started showing PWR tube distortion when volume pots were really cranked, almost on max. setting..
Winged "C" was really clean sounding, but not so sterile for lack of better word.. showed PWR distortion earlier on dial. Had more sustain between the tested tubes and developed mids which cut thru the mix very efficiently. A real tone partner in the sense of playing along with you, not against....
China 6550A was a real deception, I got a 'good deal' on a quad...they were supposed to be 'matched' and showed discrepancies solid enough , like 10% from one to the other, but figures went 40% within less then 24h of burning. White paint turned brown within less then 2 hr. Fortunately, seller refunded me and I got a pair of G.E. 6V6 GTA, 1 ECC83 from Philips - dutch made - and 3 5Y3WGTA blackplates from Philips too  ... Tubes lacked punch, high freq. details and sustain...nothing good to say about it... and what made me interested on these tubes was the fact that ching-lings claimed to use G.E. original plans... :lipsrsealed: go figure...
Sovtek 6550 metal base hold strong on current tolerances, had a very strong punch, but lacked something... We thought it would stay too clean and when distortion showed, it was harsh and lifeless...
JJ KT88/6550 was another deception... a quad also... very strong bass content, nice treble response and just the right amount of mids... however, tube current went freak and all over the place within less then 4 hours of use.. it sounded fine, but went south just too soon and my pocket tells me that such a high price tag tube should at least last a month...
All tubes were tested on all the mentioned amps with 4 different guitars and 2 different cabs - loaded with different speakers -
Bias was corrected so that tubes stayed around 70% max condition, althought they seemed to handle it when bias was a bit hotter...
As far as I can tell, Winged "C" is the best sounding for the money and I have 5 amps running them for 3 years now without any negative feedback from users. They are handling the abuse just fine...
Of course plate voltages varied a bit, but not that much o become a real consideration.. lowest plate voltage was ~ 380VDC on plexi build and highest was on Orange 80 ~480VDC.. tubes showed the basic behavior and sound regardless of which amp was up for the test.

I would really like to try Tung Sol 6550 black plate coke bottle to know why people freak sooo much at them....

All I have typed here were impression we had and were written down. I had tested them with 2 guitar players I know and they play very fine. Of course we know it is all subjective but my intention is not to make your mind on a particular brand, just offer some perspective and share my impressions...

Hope this helps

Best regards

Rzenc

I tried a lot of tubes in my SE amps. The best was the JJ 6L6GC and the reissue Mullard EL-34. Better than the other 6L6s and EL-34 new models available, although I didn't try all of them. The Sovtek stuff is pretty beefy but tonally challenged. The KT-66s I tried both Russian and Chinese were disappointing. I tried the Chinese KT-88 and they sound very nice but are not being pushed at all in those amps.

The Mullard reissue EL-34 were a surprise at how well they sounded.

Shuguang KT88's are surprisingly good.

Sovtek 6550 from ~~2008 was a sturdy workhorse near 600V and 40Wpdiss for hours.

And unlike a vintage Dyna/Tung-Sol coke-bottle, the Sovtek didn't creak when it cooled.

"tonally challenged".... IMHO, a big tube like this should not have "tone", just POWER. What comes out should not be any more than you put in, just bigger. But I did not get as far as listening tests; just smoke-benching.

The Sovtek 5881/6L6GC or WXT or whatever they call it and the EL-34 were all beefy but like I said tonally challenged. They can take a lot of abuse but don't sound as good as some of the others. I did not try the Sovtek KT-88 though.

PRR I have to say I have not seen many on the internet who know as much as you nor with the experience but do you play an instrument at all? And if you do at what level, just curious. I've learned so much from you and your posts. I really don't think I could have done what I have without you. To be 100% honest I will say that I would have NEVER been able to build these amps had it not been for reading your posts and your answers to my questions.

I am hopeful that you will continue to help me. But I am curious to know have you learned anything from me? Seriously, because I do not consider myself a credible amp builder, I do consider myself a seriously credible geetar playa.

I'm running a pair of "C"6550 on a bizarre kreature with 470VDC at plates and 467VDC on G2 and biased @ 80mA's per tube with constant extreme abuse for 2 years. It has a triode/pentode switch and tubes are holding fine under each condition. it also has a cathode bias/ fixed bias switch and again tubes hold pretty fine both ways. Any combination is ok as voltages are solid and constant on all elements. BTW, G.E. suggests using 1 resistor+cap on each tube cathode instead of both cathodes sharing the same combo res+cap. I get a fat smooth sound with 330R-20W+100uF@100VDC on each cathode. Cathode to ground voltage reads 33VDC ~100mA's per tube on this mode.
Tried xing-ling's and  .

With Respect
Best Regards

I have some Chinese made Ruby Tube 6550's which are GE clones and they deliver the goods PURE SOLID PUNCH!!
Running the plates at 550VDC on a pair is just as loud as a quad of 6L6's running at 495VDC.

Thanks guys. This is an area that I lack experience. =C= was mentioned the most so I ordered a set. I appreciate the help.
