Pickups: Which one is what?
« on: July 16, 2010, 07:51:29 pm »
A customer brought me a couple of Fender Strat and with each guitar came a bag of 3 used pickups that were removed from other guitars. How do I tell which pickup is neck, middle and lower?

For most pups:

Measure DCR. Highest = bridge, lowest = neck and middle. Or bridge, middle, neck in descending order (depending on the brand and model).
Check polarity using a magnetic compass. Bridge and neck should show the same polarity, middle should be reversed.
You're done.

Quick way for already used pups:

Measure lead length. Longest = neck, intermediate = middle, shortest = bridge.
Works most of the time.

Thanks, lead length seems to work.
