New Design
« on: August 29, 2010, 12:58:03 pm »
Hi guys,

I am working on a new design, this has attributes from many amps and the goal is to have a PCB designed that can be populated and will be flexible eough to be almost any modern high gain amp i.e. a boogie dual rec W/O the rectifiers, who needs them with high gain? Anyway this is a work in progress and will be switched to KiCad as this is the design package that I am going to use from now on, (Schematic capture, PCB layout and even 3D for free!!!!!, some learning curve) Anyway be gental, THIS IS A WORK IN PROGRESS!

Wow, that looks amazing. I have no critics (especially since it's a little over my head)

I do have to say that usually you see amp layouts in a more rectangular (not so square) fashion. What kind of chassis are you planning on using?

I have learned the hard way (many times too), is not to even consider PCB for a main board unless I plan on making numerous identical amps.  Once I have made this decision, I dont even start on the PCB, until the design has been proven with a solid working prototype - with all tweaks resolved.  Then I check the schematic 450 times against the working prototype before taking it to PCB design.

However, I have completely abandoned using PCB for the main board.  Might look cool, but way too much trouble for building less than 100 of the same amps per year.  However, I do use PCB for small "modules":  channel switcher,  relay PCB, james tone stack, etc.

A little update, and yes doing a design like this is risky, I will proto the design before I ever have one made and I do verify the designs 500X.  Enjoy

Well at the very least, it *is* fun and a valuable learning experience.
