Wire wound R placebo effect?
« on: February 03, 2012, 05:06:27 pm »
I tried some wire wounds for my EL34 screens in place of the sand 5 watts that were there. Both 1k. Seems to sound different. Is it my ears or is this typical? I'm seriously asking....i don't know! Just don't see why it would cause any difference.

Maybe the wire-wounds have more inductance or capacitance.  See:  http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20081109052907AAj9bGw

Wow, sounds like they well could have some capacitance,  and that would make sense considering they are more or less a coil right? Maybe thats it. I'll swap then out again and see if what i'm hearing is definite and which i like better. Thanks.

The 5w "sandbox" resistors are wirewound as well.

That would mean less chance of a difference, tho still a chance because each would create different degrees and values of capacitance i imagine.

A coil of wire is more likely to result in inductance, since an inductor is a coil of wire. Some stray capacitance is possible, but should be very minute in a resistor.

I've seen one which was a carbon-film cast inside a ceramic shell.
