Is this stuff only for HiFi guy ?
« on: September 23, 2012, 05:57:45 am »
I've just seen that is possible to find 6L6GC to 807 converters

I've done a bit of research and find some example of the use of this converters

all about HiFi use

Is this kind of adapter useful also in standard 6L6GC devoted guitar amps ?

One potential problem is the 807's 300-volt screen rating, which would likely be exceeded in most amplifiers using 6L6GC's.

Another possible problem is the overall height of the adapter + 807 + insulated top cap.

Other than those issues, it should work fine . . .  :icon_biggrin:

I have used 807's in a bassman clone and in an ampeg clone. They sound great and never give any problems. One amp is running 500+ volts on the plates and close to the on the screens. They work well.

That one were just on the first photo I was able to link

There are others that are more or less professionally build

The 807 is taller than most 6L6GC's, even more so once you add the converter base and top-cap.

I'd worry about having room to clear the speaker in some amps, and I definitely wouldn't want to mount them upside-down, as in most Fender amps.

807 is rated 25W Pdiss, significantly less than 6L6GC's claim of 35W.

if height is problem, consider the sylvania 5933/807W - they're about 3/8" taller than a GE 6L6GC. caveat: you'll need about another 1/2" clearance for the plate cap itself.

yes, they'll melt in a 6L6GC amp in same bias conditions. tune bias to push down power dissipation? B+ rises tho when you reduce idle current... pembroke corgi chasing it's phantom tail?

IMO, the 807 adapters are a waste of time unless you're going to sub in amp equipped with 6L6G/GA/GB/WGB.
