How tidy are your builds?
« on: October 23, 2014, 05:41:17 am »
I wonder - despite what i perceive as my best intentions I don't seem to get that precise look when I come to the end of a build.

Maybe because I go to fast - its not a race after all!

Anyway I thought of this because I found this fantastic AC30 build pics with nice music too...

This is definitely a new benchmark for tidiness ! i might stick a few pictures on the wall for inspiration the next time i build something...
Cheers,
Bakerlite

My builds are rarely tidy.  AND .......... they are typically very quiet at idle.

With respect, Tubenit

Every time I try to be tidy it hums itself off the bench.  Clearly I am missing something....

That slide show and background music (Apache) was very good. My builds are not a bench mark to display but I think most of the regulars on this site do very neat layouts(better than mine) and lead dress. I think sluckey is one of the more precise that I've seen and several others in the same category. This is about as good as it get for me. Platefire

Ha nice!
Two questions:

1)while this may be a soldering 101 question how on earth do you get those nice soldering blobs built up ON TOP of the turrets like that.  I would pay to see a close up 15 second video of you dong one of those. I always thought I was OK at soldering but now I want to learn to make em as clean lookin as that before I go at anything else.

2) what gauge buss wire is that?
I recently used bridge suspension rope for my buss wire! (18awg solid cloth as it was all I had and easy to take the cloth off. However it's a bit over the top.)  So I must add some to my next order.
Cheers,

Lol that's so clean it's ???? Dirty? :)

OP et al, here's one I'm really proud of.
It's a 70's Champ with added in reverb including the added triode like the Princeton Reverb.
I went SS rectifier & upped the filtering so it's mega quiet.
I was so proud of myself and then someone pointed out that Allen Amps calls it their Chihuahua.
(mine has a mid boost and a cute cab :)

I should do a close up video of how I do those lugs.
Basically you feed in some solder and let it fill the hole
Pull the iron tip and solder away and let the inner fill get solid
Bring in the iron and solder to create a dome

I use 20 gauge wire for the pot buss.
24 gauge buss for the short lug jumpers on the boards
22 gauge for the power supply rails and long ground lug buss on the board
