capcover, needed ?
« on: December 09, 2010, 03:59:47 pm »
Hi all,I am building a fender tweed bassman  and using the series filter caps as per the reissue  ( 2x 100 uf in series instead of 2x 20 uf in parallel ) . This is mounted on a board on the back, but wont fit under a cap cover
Does the cover serve any shielding purpose or is it just there to stop fingers poking the caps ( and providing a mounting )
thanks Brett

Caps aren't sheilded when they are placed inside the chassis, I think the cover is there to protect from shocks only .... touching them can KILL

Aside from lethal shock: caps occasionaly burst, spew acid-taint paper wadding. I've had to clean this out of a powered mixer; if it happens, you wish the mess had been contained.

But that's only happened once in decades.

Look in the Library of Information for Doug's tips on putting the caps in a bassman chassis. You may need to utilize some ingenuity to get everything to fit.

I've touched high voltage d.c. before (about 450v worth). I was lucky in how the situation went down. I promise you that you don't ever want to experience it.

I've touched it too. I think everybody should experience touching it and not dying at least once. Only trouble is..... how would you know whether you are going to die or not?
Oh well, I'm still here.

I watched a kid pee on an electric fenc do you think that compares to your cap experience? Although extremely funny when your young. So not cool for your junk.

They tried it on Mythbusters

The slow motion camera showed not a solid stream lot of dots and dashes

The first time I ever worked on an amp, I was changing filter caps. I replaced one, then for some reason pulled it back out without ever having turned the amp on. I touched both ends and the wires burned little holes in 2 of my fingers as well as gave me a good shock.

My Buddy Hamiltons pee must of been solid because he ended up on the ground peeing all over himself. I don't think he could of faked that. Mythbusters how do you explain this? huh! Well come to think of it he could of faked it but who intentionally pees on themselves? I suppose one who's intentions initially were to pee on an electric fence. Ham it's been all these years, were you faking? My life is all a lie I don't even know who I am.

Seems like a metal cover could be fabricated to cover those.......
I'll never figure this out......

Mythbusters was trying to find out if you could be killed by peeing on a 3rd rail.

That 3rd rail is at the height of the ground you're standing on (or recessed even lower). By the time the stream falls that far, it breaks up.

Maybe your friend was peeing on fence significantly higher than the ground, and didn't get the good stream break-up.
