DC Voltage doubler
« on: September 08, 2010, 10:15:30 am »
I have a 9v dc power supply.  I want to double it. Got a simple circuit?
Thanks!

Do a search on the net.  There are tons.

I use one like 4-49.

I don't think that circuit will work as it requires an AC source which gets multiplied in the rectification process.  But loosechange has a DC source.  A quick google search shows nothing simple; and there's a lot of wasted energy in the process.  Might be simpler to go with an 18VDC source.

What ToN points to needs _AC_ input. {as jjasilli typed faster.}

And that's really your cheep-n-cheerful option. Go to GoodWill (or my trashcan), find a 9V _AC_ wall-wart, wire pairs of diodes and caps to get 18V-24V DC.

Otherwise....

The dumb-answer is to tie a 9V battery to the end of your 9V supply. 9V+9V=18V.

There are standard chips to sing-up 5V-10V DC into "AC" and diode/cap-double it. Maxim is a big player. Doubler Pumps. ICL7660 and MAX1044 seem to be popular in 9V batt applications.

There are little dc-dc-converter modules that do the trick. They are available for different power ratings and several input/output combinations. They are basically little black boxes with two input and two output pins. Prices are too low to bother with a DIY circuit.

You can find a lot of them in the mouser catalog: http://www2.mouser.com/Power/DC-DC-Converters-Regulators/_/N-5gc7?Keyword=dc+dc+converter.

Ahhh, should have read the post more carefully.

So if this is coming from a 9VDC wall wart, perhaps use a 9VAC wall wart.  Double it for your needs, rectify for your other DC needs.
