Twas the night before Christmas and all across the forum
All the members lit tube amps as a way to stay warm
Six L sixes and five U four G's
We prefer Gm and not HFE
Pentodes and Triodes to bring out the chime
Half way is OK but I prefer dimed
I just built a new amp, why does it hum
Didn't ground the filaments, now I feel dumb
I came to the forum to get some advice
Followed it closely and my amp now sounds nice
This forum is the best and there's never a fight
Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night

Hope everyone's Christmas is buttery good!

-Richard

3.6 inches? Your Mom would hardly sweep.

Downeast, nothing yet, but the NWS is calling for 5+" by 1am and another 5+" by 7am, with some after-burp tomorrow.

Note that my dogs are hardly 10" tall. We'll have to toss them off the stoop and then shovel them out.

Since I've only had two 2" practices with my new 1991 plow-truck, this could be educational. If that fails, George will come over, laugh, and plow me out.

6" or 8" of very dense fluff so far. It's still coming down.

> Note that my dogs are hardly 10" tall. We'll have to toss them off the stoop and then shovel them out.

High wind from the north. Back (north) door is drifted-up so dogs went out the front; no chance they will run into the street (anyway nothing's moving out there).

Here's Molly tossed and shoveled. She doesn't think this is a good pee-place.

I ran across the parking area a few times, felt confident enough to run the driveway.... and here comes George to check on me. (He sold us the truck and plow, he lives across the street; he better check on us!)

We chatted about technique, then I told him to go away and check back in an hour. I had no problem plowing the 400 feet, didn't hit any trees (nicked a marker), but of course he'd already been through with his plow.

I made some less-deep runs in the back yard for the dogs' fun and business.

Having drive troubles. Last month the "4WD" plowtruck needed a front axle gizmo to get "4", and just now the 2WD walk-behind snow-blower became 1WD-only. The 2WD/1WD lock plate spins freely. I have it in the bathtub defrosting for study. (The wheel, not a 9HP snowblower!)

Anyway the cars can get out and any delivery truck can get in.

HIGH wind. The plowed areas will drift-over, so I'll be pushing again.

Gov Baldy declared an emergency but a lot of folks here are shopping. I'll stay off the roads: even here, too many fools using 4WD to go too fast.

I see the NYC airports are expected to be shut for days, and football was canceled?

Happy belated Christmas to everyone, and have a safe New Years.

PRR, is that a Corgi?
And, a sheared roll pin would be the first thing I'd look for on your blower.

No snow here, but cold and blustery; it's so much fun cutting wood in a 30 mph breeze. At least it splits easy.

pretty pembroke welsh corgi. friend had one - he had to give her away b/c of newborn baby - they don't like anyone intruding on their attention + she was a bit too hyper around the newborn. he offered sammi to me but i had to decline - one dog is/was enough for me to handle at the time. she's living on a ranch now outside of shiner, tx. and i understand she is quite happy. a very intelligent, and loving animal - they seem to bond to a single individual.

george seems like a good neighbor, good to hear he's checking up on the plow n00b.

ford or chevy truck? more importantly, what's the power plant?

fools in 4WDs going too fast are omnipresent - they constantly seem to lose sight of a couple of minor technical details - 1) a high center of gravity coupled to high mass, 2) they usually have crappy brakes.

3) summer tires, and 4) don't seem to understand that just because they can GO doesn't mean they can STOP.

I grew up and learned how to drive in New England with mostly rear-wheel-drive cars.  Everyone had snow tires.  Today's snow tires are 10x better, but "all season" tires usually don't work all that well on snow & ice.  Rear-wheel, front-wheel, or 4-wheel drive - you still can't stop fast!

PRR - thanks for the photo of Molly.  Good looking dog!  Corgis don't like deep snow much though...

> a sheared roll pin would be the first thing I'd look for on your blower.

It's a deluxe cheap machine. The wheel is pinned to the axle with a spring bolt. You pull out to disengage one wheel, easier to turn. You put the pin in when you need real push. The pin-pulling knob begged to hit something. Last winter it broke off in the 2WD mode, fine. Looked like the broken stub would stay. No, it finally worked loose between drive-plate and wheel and escaped. So I put in a 3/8" bolt long enough to stay put.

Now I have NO drive at all. It has done this a few times before, always fixed itself. The transmission is friction-drive, I think ice gets in, no friction. Engine heat or sun will clear it.

> ford or chevy truck? more importantly, what's the power plant?

It's a 1991 commercial truck, high miles, and this isn't Texas. Is there any choice? A Ford is an OK truck but they made SO many engines. When you burn one out, you can't find an equivalent. Whereas a Chevy, if you aren't hauling horses across Texas with a 454, there's only the 283 (I think this one is a 1992 350). Possibly the third mill in this frame. May be mechanically healthy but in real bad tune.

Punky

By my calculations, global warming has raised global temperatures by a solid negative 2.37 degrees.
All this snow and ice will surely give way to hot brimstone and general disarray by next Tuesday if we don't stop using oil filled electrolytic capacitors immediately.
You have been warned!

Whereas a Chevy, if you aren't hauling horses across Texas with a 454, there's only the 283 (I think this one is a 1992 350).

Horses are self-propelled. Maybe you should attached your snow thingy to one.

> where's Molly?

After many transmission swaps, there's a hole in the floor big enough for a Corgi. The glovebox lid falls off. The extended cab is full of stray parts, sharp. Door latches are dubious. The grrrrls can ride the sedan, the minivan, the sportscar, but not this one, not while I'm busy.

Anyway: they leap into the other cars, but try that on a K2500 HD with a 3" body-lift.

> sounds like she's running good

Yeah, as long as I don't take my foot off the gas. On a '66 Ford V-8, I'd change the spark-plugs... had a Merc the idle speed doubled when I did that, someone had been screwing the idle instead of replacing the plugs. Also wonder if the ECU and the engine go together. And I know the O2 sensor lead is hanging loose. Any or all of these could be the issue: it runs too fast when cold, then slows and slows then gallops 200rpm/2000rpm/200rpm/2000rpm/200rpm. Like the open-loop programming will run in any case, but the closed-loop is wrong or confused.

I have a code-reader but not the 1991 adapter.

Foot is cheaper than fixing, for now.

you've got it down

nyeugh, I cut-out most of the embarassing parts, but you can see where I forgot to drop the blade (no, I didn't mean to do that!). When the camera was not looking I scalped the lawn, and pushed much of the driveway dirt into the street. Before I even had the plow on, I backed into trees and a swamp-hole big enough to swallow a Miata (however the truck drove out in RWD).

Snow-blower decided to drive, after I started taking it apart (I scared it?), and especially when I remembered which lever was which.... (duh!). Milled a path to the oil tank, and three more dog-runs.

The glovebox lid falls off.

duck tape... works great on road rash bandages too... don't ask..

there's a hole in the floor big enough for a Corgi.

again, duck tape...  :angel

Also wonder if the ECU and the engine go together.

absolutely.

and yes, very likely running in open loop - and confused where to set the cold idle - temp sending unit, O2 sensor is def part of problem maybe not all the problem. could also be a flaky throttle position sensor, or EGR failure.

haven't worked on anything newer then 95 SS, but i think your is OBD-1 like my SS, but you can get the codes anyway...

http://www.extreme-check-engine-light-codes.com/GM%20OBD1%20Decoder.htm

Foot is cheaper than fixing, for now.

yes, knowing how to drive "junk" is a skill... one should be allowed to put it on a resume - shows one has excellent multitasking skills.  :angel

I cut-out most of the embarassing parts

aha! edited to protect the guilty!

    Enough said.

BTW, Thank You, for teaching/ showing me how two use the Quote insert.
