Tone stack losses with a cathode follower
« on: December 31, 2010, 01:29:17 am »
I was curious OK here is the thought does a typical TMB tonestack with a cathode follower would it be considered neutral or not adding any boost to circuit,. Adding a slight boost or still negative in gain on the circuit. Im talking a standard fender marshall type . Thanks Bill

Slight boost. I'd say about 3 to 5 decibels more. It's hard for me to hear a difference in perceived volume but I could hear that it's brighter. You get more treble, high mids.  A cathode follower has a lower output impedance that makes driving a load with out lose of highs better.

It definitely adds a boost and when you put a cathode cap on it, it's enough to be used as a lead switch.

What type of cathode cap are you talking about I say schematics anyone. No just joking,
The reason i asked .I have let several of my friends use my TOS . They asked me Bill would you build us that with two clean channels. because they all use pedals for there overdrive. But they just wanted a standard TMB type tonestack. I dont know why the OD channel is killer but thats what they asked. So my question was really About that because I like the buttery smoothness of the clean channel with the added paralleled tube onto the second gain stage but if the TMB with cf was neutral i would leave it like that . But Tubnit also has it in the TOS light with just two gain stages and still gets the bloom so i could go either way. Better yet one the first way one the second way, one using fender tone stack values the other using marshall. Thanks Bill

OR ........ like this????

Not sure if the Fenderish clean channel would work when switched to the Marshallish clean channel?
