baffle material
« on: January 06, 2011, 12:46:56 pm »
I've built a dovetailed poplar box for a 1x12 cab.  The baffle will be bolted to wooden cleats.  I've used 5/8 or 3/4 plywood in the past, but wondering if there's other materials you all might recommend that you also prefer over plywood and your reasons for that.  Particle board?  MDF?  Thanks!

Good quality plywood is purrfect. Particle board isn't very resistant and chips very easily. MDF is usually too heavy and dead sounding when it comes to MI apps.

Try to find some plywood with at least 5 plys or more

Luan Plywood  is a good choice

Baltic plywood would be the best

Birch  is also a good choice

The less voids the better

This might help

I've always used Baltic birch.

3/8" (10mm) for 25 W or less

1/2" (13mm) for single 12's 50 watts or less

3/4" (17mm) for 2x 12's 4x12's and high watt 1x12's

3/4" I like to front mount and use a separate grille cloth frame.
