Midwest blizzard...
« on: February 01, 2011, 11:09:11 am »
I am just outside of St. Louis and the weather "experts" have predicted 12-18 and in some areas with "thunder snow" to get 24+ inches.  Now this is on top of 1/4 to 1/2 inch of ice on trees, yards, streets, and power lines.  WITH about 1-3 inches of sleet on top of the ice.  I'm sure you folks in the mountains and lake effect areas and nor-easter areas are laughing.  However, even as much snow as we get every year, 90% of the people here can not drive in an inch of snow, much less what we are supposed to get.  Everything is completely shut down.  They have just issued a Blizzard Warning due to the high winds about to move in.  They are also predicting 0 degrees tonight.  About a month ago the weather "experts" predicted 8-12 inches of snow and we got a dusting.  About three weeks ago they predicted 1-3 inches and we got 10.  I'm not sure whether to start building an igloo or break out the Speedo...

Time to turn on a few amps to stay warm!

Bought 20 gallons of gas for the generator, topped off the 100# propane tank,a carton of Camels, 1 case of Pepsi and 3, 3/4" 60x60 panels of Baltic birch.

Let it snow! all 18-24" they are calling for

I'm gonna build cabs with no interruptions!

Ritchie200,

Dooh!, I did'nt see this post, I'm sorry I would have joined in here.

I think you have it covered with a great plan. Yes light up that Major! The cops can't get there.     :angel

Hey, my wife and I own some land on Norfork Lake in Ark. and when we drive down, we go through St. Louis. Anyway I was watching Diners, Driveins, and Dives, and they went to "Sweetie Pies" in St. Louis, food looked great! Have you ever been there? We tried to find it one time, but we started to go through a rough neighborhood and I turned back. Is it in a rough part of town, is there a safe way to get there? Next time we go down to Mt. Home Ark. if you like the food there I'd be glad to buy lunch.

stingray, you got a great plan too! What'ch makin, 2x12, 4x12, ??? 1x12???

LooseChange is used to it, he's almost in Canada.

         Thanks,    Brad

BACK!

Whew!

My ex called and the power was out.

so now th ex and the kids are now in the shop too, well actually with the family I rent my shop space from.

drifts right now only about 24" but its a white out.

should have bought more pepsi LOL oh an LC thats never an item i don't have, i keep a roll in the glove box even.

Generator runnin like a champ

took me 1 1/2 hrs to make a 12 mile round trip. rt 223 was clear, but those other 4 miles of michigan back roads were a white knuckle ride.

3 of those miles are nuthin but twists and turns and follows the Rasin River, the other side of the road is a 12' deep ditch. Takes a lot to stick my CJ5, but that ditch would eat it and the river would kill ya.

we're all safe now and the every one is warm and tucked in.

Oh I can hear the ice pellets now hitting the side of the shop. gonna be a looooong nite out here

Hah! The epic storm that never was!  At least in St. Louis!  The local blogs are RIPPING the poor weather guys and gals.  Central Missouri got up to 20 inches, St. louis got about 3 inches of sleet and about an inch of flurries.  Also, the "experts" were predicting 40-60mph winds last night - a few gusts and that was it.  The big problem was as we all watched the radar and the storm moving quickly out - they were STILL saying we would get an additional 10 inches?!?!?!

Willabe, the old location WAS in a bad section of town - a lunch only trip, if at all.  There is a new location that is more centrally located.  HOWEVER, even tho in a better area, it is again lunch only...  I have been there and was not that impressed.  I am not a big "brown food" fan but if I do eat it, it better be good.  I really wonder if the people who gush over it have ever had anything to compare it against.  If you are going to stop for food, let me know and I can direct you to some Italian that IS to die for.  There is only one brown food - down home cookin' place in Missouri, as far as I am concerned.  It is in Sikeston in southeast Missouri and is called "Lambert's, Home of the Throwed Rolls".  Best to go in the summer as they use local produce when possible.  It is unreal and Sweetie Pie is not even close.  Sweetie Pie does have a musical connection in that the owner was an Ikette, from the Ike and Tina Turner Review.

We do have some awesome food places here is town.  A fav of mine is a tiny little hamburger place where you sit on the little swivel chairs on either side of the grill, so you can watch them cook.  The owner brews his own Root Beer and serves it up in frosted mugs.  If you want to clog your arteries, I would go here any day over Sweetie Pies.  And you don't have to worry about your car.....

Stingray, sounds like you have a full house (again).  I hope you guys don't kill each other before you kick them out!  Be safe!

I'm glad to hear you guys are all safe. Take a look at my other post for our snow totals.

stingray, sounds like you're a good man. Got to be a little hard to take in an ex. but FWIW I think that shows a good hearted man.      I tip my hat to you sir.

Ritchie200, I think I'll take you up on that the next time we go down, thanks. It wont be till spring, I'll pm you about it when we have our next trip planed.

We like home cooked food, (who does'nt) and it's about an 11 hour trip down, so we need to stop and eat and strech our legs a little. Were not big on the micky d type thing, so were trying to find some good stop and eat places. It's always good to get the locals to stear you to the right places to eat.

Had a blizzard here for two days too.  It finally let up at mid-day today, and I can now see the neighbor's house. Our driveway is not passable yet, really big drifts. My buddy is gonna plow it out Thursday. So it's been watching the TV, playing a little music, and wrestling with my 2 yr old boxer!

And way too cold to work on my El Camino project......
I'll never figure this out......

Sorry Thermion!  I just saw this!  Brown food is anything fried - fried chicken, fried green beans, fried okra, fried greens, fried twinkies (actually really good out of a dedicated frier!), you get the idea!  All that good food that congeals in your arteries!

Jim

ps 65 degrees here today - woowhoo!  Of course they are forecasting tornados tonight....
