OK it's Mardi Gras, and "Fat Tuesday" a com'in !
« on: March 06, 2011, 08:36:34 pm »
I can't spell to save my life, but I'll take a stabe at this.

"Bon Ton Raule", meaning "Let the Good Times Roll"

NAFAICT, without gettin into the church, 'Fat Tuesday" is the day before Lent. So Norlens partys in execess up till Lent? (which is were you have to give up something, for a certain length of time)

Anyway, I was at the Jewel grocery store yesterday and low and behold, there they are Polish "Paczki" (donuts, mmmnn, donuts, yes, Poonch-key) 3 kinds! 1, Rasberry/Glased, 2, Strawberry/Powder Sugar coated, and 3, Choclate Coated/Cream filled, my favorate!!!

So can any one here enlighten me/us more about Mardi Gras without going into something we should not be talking about here?

I don't belive you can study Norlens music without looking at their life style, or any other places music for that matter.

It ain't about Na'leans! Noboby does Mardi Gras like MOBILEEE, ALABAMA. Long live Joe Caine! Fat Tuesday's a com'in fo shore. Ash Wednesday's a somber day.

Google  "Joe Caine" and then "Comic Cowboys"

Mardi Gras is in response to the Christian observance of Lent.

Lent is observed by 40 days of fasting.

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, so the day before, being Tuesday, you would traditionally eat up everything in the pantry.

Traditionally many Christians will give up a favorite sin as well. So it may stand to reason if you're about to embark on 40 days without imbibing, it may be a good idea to party down on Tuesday.

I knew 16 yrs of Catholic schooling would come in handy one day  :angel

Party starts in November in Mobile. Joe Caine Day (Sunday) is huge. Fat Tuesday is the blow out!

Ray, thank you. I think I understand that part of it, but it seems there is -- so -- much more to it down their.

From what I've read about it they work all year to make their paraid costumes/flotes for next year.

There's a culture down there thats unlike any other in the world! Which forms/feeds all of the music, arts, food, and life style going on down there!  Right or wrong,  "it is what it is".

No where on the planet do you have/find that kind of music and food!!!

BTW, slucky, I think you're wrong,      The melting pot that spilled out to all of us spilled out of Nor'Lens!

There's a huge debate between Mobile and New Orleans about the origins of the Mardi Gras festival. (I started it first! No you didn't! We did!) It really is a big deal down here. Even the Mobile County school system shuts down for a week!

I never had the chance when I was living in the southland to do Mardi Gras, but I have to say that given any reason the southern gentry sure do put on a party.

My favorite was the Breaux Bridge Crawdad festival in LA. The whole town shut down to party up! seems every one had a big bunch of etouffee that was "better dan dems over der"

Oh Yeah! it was like dying and going to Zydeco heaven! I'm 1st gen Polish/American and learned to appreciate the accordion sound at and early age. those guys in the swaps and deltas really know how to get the most from a squeeze box and an old wash board!

Laisser les bons temps rouler- Let the good times roll!

Ironically, Mrs. Licious and I went to NOLA this weekend.  We didn't even realize it was Mardi Gras until 2 days before we left.  Our trip was all about going to the Acme Oyster House.  I'd walk a mile for a Camel and I'd drive 525 miles for oysters.  Acme is still a 12 on a scale of 1 to 10.  I found the Mardi Gras parades to be somewhat upsetting.  The whole thang reeks of the KKK, masks, krews (spelled with a K), burning crosses..... I mean come on.  Other than that, it was a fun trip.  I got drunker than I've been in a decade.  We partied like it was 1982.
