6K6 vs 6V6
« on: July 02, 2011, 05:40:38 pm »
Q1)  Can a 6K6 handle 277 volts?

Q2)  Tone wise how do they compare with a 6V6?

Thanks, Tubenit

I think he can, 277v is not much mote than +10%

6k6gt is rated for 315v & 285v

Yeah - it will be fine.(After all the Fender 6G15 ran it at about 300V). The dissipation is the critical thing.

For what it's worth, I've put 6K6G's (that's the coke-bottle style ones) in my 5E3 copy, in place of the 6V6's. Don't know the B+ off hand, but it had to be at least 340vdc.

The sound is similar, but the 6K6 is a true pentode. Once you reach distortion, depending on how hard your preamp drive them, you may notice a bit more brightness or edge to the sound. I personally like them.

I'm surprised I didn't give you a few of them before now. I had a bunch of the coke-bottle style that are too tall to use in a typical stand-alone reverb unit.

HBP,

You probably don't remember but that was the one tube that I actually gave to you. I had gotten some tubes from my son in law in St. Louis.   You had a reverb unit that you said you could use it in.

I put one in this Carolina SongBird build and it sounds really superb to me.

Thanks, Tubenit
