does a 5g9 have a 2 6l6 equivalent
« on: July 08, 2011, 11:47:38 am »
I was thinking about doing a 5g9 because of the great tremolo but need it with 2 6l6,s instead of 2 6v6,s.
Thanks Bill

So build it with a larger PT and OT and enjoy it.
That's all you need. Use a Tremolux or Vibrolux OT and a suitable power transformer that can handle the extra current.
It will be a bigger sounding 5G9.

Hammond 1750J PT and 290CX OT. Use a 5AR4 or even a 5V4 rectifier tube.

It will sound killer good.

Thank You my friend I thought so but just in case there was already something out there I wanted to check . Tubswell said he thought this was the best vibrato or at least his favorite of all the fenders.

Tubswell said he thought this was the best vibrato or at least his favorite of all the fenders.

FWIW, Tone Quest Magizine raved about the 5G9, including the vibrato. They also liked the larger cab it has, they felt it made a big differance in the tone.

I think that'll sound great with a 2x6L6 OP!

I'm trying to finish up my layout drawing so I can get started on mine. (6V6's)

I wish you well on your new build.

Brad Im kind of an odd ball I was going to do it very unconventionally instead of the mike channel I was going to match it up with a train wreck front end for the other channel I have figured that with 12ay7,s it kind of tones down the train wreck to more of a blues wreck.
Then I will make it footswitchable, I just have to get it together on the tryout table and tweek the inputs to have the same amount of signal hitting the PI so the wreck side isnt over powering the 5g9 side. unfortunatly to do that when using dropping resisters it ends up attinuating the signal some or changing how bright the side Im trying to drop signal from is.
Then I have to change some things earlier in the frequency shaping to get it to sound the same again.

It always seems to be a royal pain in the ass but when its done its worth it. But then again twice know Ive had to scrap my original plan for something else when just adding pre amps together, because it just didnt work out.
The real problem was I just didnt know enough to make it work out.   :think1:
Thanks Bill

You probably know this, but just in case, the preamp on the 5G9 is the same as the 5E3.

They have interactive volume controls. A simple A/B box ft. sw. and you have a 2 channel amp. Set 1 channel to 5 on the volume and set the other to 10 and you go from a clean mid-scooped tone on one to full tilt over drive on the other. I'm putting in a relay to get ride of the A/B box and the 2 extra guitar cables.

Might be enough of a change in drive to not have to mess with all the tweeking.

I know but the tweaking is the fun part I cant get to something new if I dont try differant things together. sometimes they work out sometimes they dont but you never know unless you try. .
Bill
then if it does I have something to share with the forum

You know in thinking about the 5e3 Ive had the pleasure to play with. Something more along the lines of Tubnits take on the overdrive of his mini TOS might be more in order extra stage with cf instead of double extra stage.
In the 5e3 I built that would have been to much. Many points to ponder.   :think1:
Thanks Bill

If I was wanting a same kind of trem in a 6L6 amp, the brown tremolux (6G9B) is closest

But the BF tremolux or vibrolux is nice too.

some on the end of this vid (from 1:18 on)

1965 Fender Tremolux Amp Demo

It has nice tones too
