My 97 year old Dad Passed Away

Just lost my 97 year old Dad. Believe it or not up to 11 August he was living by himself, still driving, his mind sharp as a tack--body lagging behind though!!! He fell and broke his hip, had hip replacement surgery, went to rehab for two months then had a heart attack and went down hill from there until he passed away 25 Oct.

What a great Dad he was! I always laughed when he would tell folks that I would practice(when I was still living at home) my electric guitar until late at night and he would tell me to turn it off---so I would turn my amp off (silvertone 1482) but continue to play the guitar unplugged and he would lay in his bed steamed because he could still hear the strings plinking!!!!

Thanks! Funeral is today. He looked so natural at the wake last night. He's free from the suffering he endured last two months and I was there with him through all of it since I am the only living relative out of out immediate family(his chief caregiver). So this is the hard part today, the final goodby for this earth---but I'm planning on seeing him, mom and sis on the other side(Heaven/John 14.2). Plate

Sounds like you both finished well in your relationship and that you loved him dearly. That's cool. My heart goes out to you.  I lost my dad last year and miss him terribly.

I am very sorry to hear this.

I miss my father too, I "talk" to him pretty regularly, and I swear all these years later he still helps me out.

Plate, I'm very sorry to hear of your father passing. You were blessed to have him so long and it sounds like you two had a good bond. I lost my dad 6/7 years ago and all was good between us. He almost made it to 89. Hang in there, you'll make it through. Like a good son you took good care of him, and there's only so much any one of us can do. He was called home and nothing can harm or hurt him any more! (At least this part is good and IMHO it's a big part in the grand schem of life, still none of us want to let go.      )

Like I offered in condolenece to tubenit when his dad passed....      a part of him is still in you and that is a good thing.   

So this is the hard part today, the final goodby for this earth---but I'm planning on seeing him, mom and sis on the other side(Heaven/John 14.2).

Thanks Ya'll for your kind consolation. I figure it will get better in time but right now is kinda tough. I have an old four track cassette recording where I recorded a medley of his favorite songs with him playing harp back in 1993. Naw- he is not a great harp player but OK and I coached him during recording to get the best out of him. The recording has a drum machine track, bass guitar, rhythem/lead guitar that I did for him to record with. It was originally mastered to cassette but I'm in the process of doing a new better mixdown to CD on my computer with ION USB Recorder/MixMeister. Working on getting the total best out of this mixdown somehow makes me feel connected with him again. Thanks, Platefire

Kathy gave me a cardboard phono-disk, I transcribed it to CD, and Kathy broke up in tears. Her mother had sung "Kiss Me Twice" into a "Record yourself" booth on the boardwalk back in 1953, and passed away some years later.

I lost my Pops long ago.
I certainly miss him but they live on through us.....in one way or another.

You had a lot of good years together with your Dad!
Those tracks you did with your him are priceless.
As much as I dislike a lot of the cold internet stuff of the digital age,there are some real home made gems to be kept for eternity.
Time will heal.

Thanks again! Yes those old recordings are priceless. I have a bunch of records my Grandpa recorded on a recordio(an old 40's/50's home record recording machine). He played an old monkey wards dobro style guitar, fiddle and invited his musician friends over for jam sessions--that many sessions he recorded. I inherited all those old records and transfered them to cassettes in the 90's and now it's time to tranfer them to CD---and soon as I get that done the standard will probably be some kind of small memory disk. I have a hard time keeping up with the latest technology. Platefire
