I got this one in today just for a bias check on a pair of new tubes. This is one fine amp with lots of bells and whistles that actually work. Very nice fine tuning. Not overkill at all. The Vibrato is actually using vintage Magnatone Varactors for the vibrato. One heck of a nice sounding amp

Nice! The controls are certainly different. Makes me wonder what tubes/schematic is close to--Deluxe Reverb--and assuming it's turret/eyelet board? Plate

It is an eyelet board. It is well made. I dont know what it is modeled after but it sure is verstaile as could be wanted. Great job Juke! I think he may be here on the forum some where. Old timer. Knows his stuff

Yes i ment Varistors.  I took gut shots but most of them were blurred. I have a flouresent light and taking pics with it is almost useless. I didnt get a chance to keep it overnight. Otherwise i take most pics outside these days. Much better lighting. Here are a few shots / No full chassis shots. I screwed up again

I'm not sure, but it sounds like those varistors he's using are new.

Look what he says at his web site about them. Go to the "about" page and there's a short blurb at the bottom. It would be nice to be able to buy them.

Definitely not jukelemon. This guy goes by the name Warbler Muse over on the Magnatone/Valco forum at Yahoo. I've never seen a post by him on this forum. I received an email from him last year when I did my 'Warbler' project. His comment was something like 'nice work, but not very original name.' I had no idea at the time there was another warbler out there.

I need those varistors for an old Magnatone that I'm restoring for a customer. I'd love a source. Vibroworld hasn't listed any in a couple years now.

We'll see.   Really the Magnatone isn't worth a lot without working Vibrato, so if it were mine, I'd splurge.

So they are new and not NOS. I thought he was implying on his web page, he had found the OEM of the varisistors.

But $80's a piece?    That's a low down dirty trick.         If their new, he can buy all he wants at a low price. I wonder how many he can buy for $80's?

He could have said he makes an amp that's called a warbler, but he left you with a kind of question or coded message instead. I hope somebody finds the OEM and lets the cat out of the bag on him. He doesn't seem to be a very forth right person.

Look again. They are NOS (New Old Stock). And that's $80 for two.

I had posted about my warbler over on the Maggie/Valco forum. He never said so, but his email was to let me know that he had been selling amps under the name "warbler" since the '90s. He possibly saw my project as competition. I responded to assure him I was a hobbyist and had no thoughts about using that name commercially. Never heard back from him so I guess he felt at ease. He was never rude, but was just letting me know I might be about to step on his turf.

I can remember back in my days in the tv shop/supply house that there was a 3' x 3' display board full of Workman brand varistors. Some were the exact ones in the maggie amps. I think he discovered these seemingly worthless parts and built his vibrato amps around them. And he probably had enough insight to hit every ma and pa tv shop to buy all he could find. The internet has really made the Magnatone amps pricey. It has also turned a lot of worthless shit into gold!

Where did you get that picture of those varistors? That stash would build/repair a lot of amps.

He said at his site that the company that made them for over 60 years, was unaware of them, ever being used for audio.

What were they used for? I guess in a TV, is that why TV shops stocked them?

They were used a lot in TVs, but I just don't remember what circuits. Been too long. Maybe PRR knows...

That pic came from the Magnatone/Valco group.  Here's a pic from another source that shows the original Workman packaging. As you can see, there was a variety of styles...
