I think of aging and memory sort of like this.
When you're 21, you have 3 file cabinets to search thru to retrieve information.
When you're 61, you have 9 file cabinets to search thru to retrieve information. Takes longer because there is more to sort thru and to keep track of.
And then there is the issue of wisdom and knowing how to enjoy life and people that can be a benefit of aging and personal growth if someone is willing to show up and do the work to make that happen.
I have a friend, Allen, that is 75 yrs old and absolutely the most courageous and gutsy guy I've ever known. When he turned 75, he got on a bike in Asheville and rode it out to Kitty Hawk (NC outer banks). It is important to note that he did not train for this and is not a cyclist. When he turned 65, he walked 1100 miles on the Appalachian trail alone. Took him months and months to do it. I would not have the mental toughness to have done either of those at any age. I've never seen him afraid of anything. He has zero health problems and his spiritual insight and personal wisdom is just remarkable. I've somewhat adopted him as my mentor. And his beautiful wife is just as cool as he is. Plus he is outrageously funny.
