Where is everyone getting their blank chassis from?
« on: January 14, 2012, 05:23:35 pm »
I'm looking for a supplier of blank steel chassis, 18 gauge would be good with a lip round the top big enough to contain a square cut out for a captive nut. 2 1/2" deep by various lengths and widths.

The Hammond 1441 and 1431 series are close but no cigar.

Where do you buy from?

I've tried them all, mate. AES stock the Hammond line I linked to. I've done RS, Mouser, Farnell and all the other amp build places I can find, UK and USA.

When I needed tweed-style chassis, I bought them from Doug.

I haven't bought from this guy yet, but plan to because I have a need for a couple of odd-sized pieces not sold anywhere else.

The first sentence from that web site has me suspicious.

"Standard chassis are made of 0.063", 14 gauge aluminum.  14 Gauge aluminum is over 50% thicker than Hammond chassis, 0.04"."

For one thing, #16 gauge is .060, #14 gauge is .074.  For another, isn't Hammond chassis steel?  That would make relative thickness a moot point.

Why don't you use gauge in the shelf , they do the job for any amp no ?

I built the HoSo using the DirtyDawg alum. chassis, no issues, nice and sturdy. I dunno how big of a transformer you want to put on aluminum, but it sure is easier to work with than steel.

For one thing, #16 gauge is .060, #14 gauge is .074.

Sheet metal thickness gauges are different for steel and aluminum.

For another, isn't Hammond chassis steel?  That would make relative thickness a moot point.

Hammond makes aluminum chassis as well, e.g., the 1444 series.

go to weber's site  and search for  chassis kits, then go to blank chassis. I get mine from there
Ernie

EDIT:  It appears that Weber is not selling blank chassis now (from what I can tell)but instead refers to two other websites? One of those links does not seem to be selling blank chassis that I can tell and the other website is the link Doug does not want listed.

With respect, Tubenit

I buy .125 aluminum sheet that I bring to a metal shop and they fold it on a big break according to the dimensions I need. I could do that with lighter gauge stainless steel but it is easier to drill holes in aluminum, once I get back to my shop

I've got one of his chassis sitting here, but I haven't built anything on it yet.  The quality is fine, though, and I've no worry about using it.  I just haven't had the time yet.

Ive used a couple of those no problems for me, but havnt bought any for a while. Ive bought several from ceriatone his were good but shi[pping is getting expensive, Ive also bought the blank chassis from weber to bad they dont have anymore.
Wasnt Doug just checking to see if we needed some chassis. lets figure out maybe 2 sizes we would use ande have him get them blank and buy from him.

One of the sizes mentioned had an 8" width. Keep in mind that a 1" x 10 is only 9 1/4" wide. I have to get a 1" x 12" and rip it down to make it work. If the chassis' are 7 1/4" wide, a 1" x 10" will work. Much cheaper! I have a few 8" chassis on hand but once gone, my future chassis will take that into consideration, wherever I end up getting them.
