Installing a Master Volume on a Tweed Super 5F4
« on: May 20, 2012, 08:55:13 am »
Hi.
I would llike to know if anyone has ever installed a Master Volume on a 5F4 (I guess so!) and which/how... So I would like like to know if the Lar/Mar would be any good in the 5F4 and if so, how and where to install it? I already have the Lar/Mar parts at home so hopefully I can use those and not buy extra stuff.

Oh, and if the Lar/Mar doesn't work in there, just shoot if you have any suggestions to make. The 5F4 is a great great amp, but I'm looking for some more usability, at home mainly. On stage it's just perfect as it is, it has he perfect amount of grind at stage volumes. Here are some pics that show the board and amp.

Thanks!

LarMar will be fine. Look at the attached pics...

A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

Sluckey, you are the man! Thanks a bunch! So it's basically the exact same method as in any Marshall? Have you had any success with the Lar/Mar in a Fender?

I've never used the LarMar MV in any amp. I'm sure some other forum members have though. I have no reason to believe it will be anything but fully successful if wired correctly.

Great looking build! I like that you routed the heater wires as in a real tweed amp, instead of having them run "over" the sockets and closer to the fiberboard. I'm not sure why folks do that, as the "right way" leaves more working space in a pretty cramped chassis.

Thanks a lot! I usually run the heater wires above the sockets on blackface builds, but never on tweeds where, like you said, the space is more scarce. I have built about twenty amps total, Marshalls and Fenders exlusively. I'm scared to go up to Voxes and Dumbles... They scare the hell out of me! And besides, I have never found any real good Dumble layout. Nor have I ever seen or heard a real one so I couldn't even compare the result with the "real" ones... You can live all your life with Marshalls and Fenders, you'll have just what you need, these amps have it all!

Here's some more 5F4 goodness: I think I'm a wiring maniac...  :help: Cheers!

I have a 5F4 with the Lar Mar master.  Works very well, but I had a problem to begin with.  The Alpha pot varied too much.  I hooked up 2 meters and at halfway the dual pot was way far apart.  Maybe just coincidence.  I tried a couple more of the alpha's and they were better.  I ended up using PEC.  I use them in all my amps with the Lar Mar.  A friend of mine said I was crazy to pay 30 bucks for a pot while he was playing through a cabinet with scumback speakers.

It is a great looking build.

Forgot, use shielded wire.

Here is another drawing of the LarMar that is slightly easier to look at.

fwiw, I put one of these MVs in a 5e5a I built (essentially the same amp as a 5F4) and thought it sounded a bit harsh. I left it in there for two years or so, just leaving it turned up all the way all the time. Then I did some searching, and found this:

I replaced the PPIMV with the one in reply #3 and it sounded much better to my ears than the ppimv . ymmv.
