Recording Help Please

Some of the guys wanted me to post a few sound clips of my new 5G9 but I've never done this before.

Ed said to just plug in a mic to the computers tower but it's not working very well for me. I have Windows 7.

I found an old RS stereo condenser mic and put in a new battery. But when I record with it on playback all I get is a _very_ low volume even with the speakers turned all the way up, all 3, the speakers and on the Real-Tech and on the computers screen.

I tried it in stereo and in mono, tried each side. No go, _very_ low playback, almost inaudible.

Any ideas?

Troubleshooting is troubleshooting - it's a process of elimination. Start at the end of the chain - is playback of other audio files okay? If so, we can rule that out. If your regular mp3s and .wav files sound okay on that computer then you have to figure out where in the chain the input is getting hosed. Does the computer record line level signals okay? If so, then we know that at least part of it works right. If that's the case, then I would suspect the mike and the only way to find out easily is to try a different mike - but if you don't have access to one then that isn't so easy. But you should have a plain old cord, so plug that in and record some buzz when you touch the tip; if it plays back at normal volume then you can be pretty safe in blaming the mike.

Other things/clips I've down loaded sound fine. I was wondering if there's a setting that can be adjusted for the input/recording mic? I can't find it if there is.

I'll try a plain cord with finger tip buzz.

Ok, first I tried a plain cord and same problem. Next I tried a different mic, same thing, _very_ low playback volume.

Played back a few downloaded clips and plenty of volume.

Ok, I think I found the settings.

There are mic record/playback settings _and_ a mic boost setting, up to 30dB.

Now when talking into the mic the color bar graph on the realtek screen lights up/moves to the right.

I'm gonna try recording some guitar.

One thing though, when playing back my talking into the mic, it makes you sound like your a munchkin.

Ok, I got something recorded that will work good enough.

But how do you post it?

I read what Doug posted in sound-bits on posting them, but I don't realy get it.

I think I need a site to store them at/on?

I also posted this in sound bits, I guess it should be finished up there?

Lots of people use Soundcloud. I use Box.net but they are not the same thing. Box is better for storing multiple kinds of data files and not as mp3-player-like as soundcloud, but Box is great for pictures, videos, music, spreadsheets, database files, whatever. Box.net is free, and you get 5 gigs of storage. But try Soundcloud and see how you like it.
