Any Suggestions For Good Books To Learn From?
« on: November 13, 2012, 10:26:31 am »
I have quite a few books already but was wondering if anyone has one or two books that help them the most.

I read Gerald Weber recommend Basic Electronics by the Navy which explains things from the beginning. Anyone own that book?

Trouble is a lot of those books have loads of sections that really don't apply to amps. The navy book starts talking about things like radar and all that kinda stuff! You wouldn't be able to utilise those parts of the book.

As far as tube electronics is it worth me parting with the money for that book or is most of that info available on the net for free?

A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

There is a lot out there on the net.  Some good and others bad.
I found the valve wizard helpful.  The links on the valve wizard website might be useful.

Down load RDH4, from this site.  lots of theory and info.

Good Luck

Old Basic Electronics textbooks, I just skipped sections that did not apply.  We are working with AC and DC in the same circuit and knowing a little of each is very beneficial.  Other than this, I have learned the most from Sluckey, Willabe, HBP, Topbrent, Binwitt and Psyco, just reading their posts.  Hell, I cannot even mention all the people on this board I have learned from. Merlins book are good as well.

I've read it, and that particular one is a waste of time. And I say that having been in the Navy as an Aviation Electronics Tech.

Some of the NEETS modules are good for introductory electrical and electronic theory. After that, any and all books at the link Kagliostro posted (it's a favorite of mine).

Warning: There are some good guitar-amp related books, but if you really want to know how tubes work, you also have to spend time in the books that don't talk about amps but deal with basic electronic concepts.

Thanks guys for the replies. So really the link Kagliostra posted has most of the info i'd need to know? I actually downloaded a couple of the books from there already and have them saved to desktop.

I bought that Gerald Weber DVD that SILVERGUN recommended. It's really good. Especially like how he dissects the amp schematically and takes you through all the components one by one. 4 hours long it is!

I have bought a ton of books lately. This is a great one. Simplified guide to electronic circuits, test procedures, by Hugh Moon.
You can buy it here for $4.40 including shipping.

Jack Darrs book on amplifier repair is great but I think you can only get it on CD.
Here is a great site with tons of downloadable books on tube equipment including tube amps.

I still like Kevin O'Conner TUT books. TUT 1 and TUT 3 real good for a starting point. Their not inexpensive but have a lot in them.
