Two-Too Hot Epiphone Casino pickups

I have a Korean made Epi. Casino,,,,both pickups measure 12.5 K at the out put jack,,,my question is:

Can windings be removed from the pickup until you get down to about 8 K (measuring at different points as you unwind) ????   Or should I just bite the bullet and shuck out some bucks for new ones?

Yes, you can do that. I'm not sure how easy those particular pickups are to get into without damaging something.

The enamel wire will be like a hair; very easy to break. As you're unwinding, you'll probably need a razor blade or a light touch with sandpaper to remove the insulation to measure resistance.

Be careful when resoldering the wire. Of course, if it breaks, you just remove another turn and try again.

Worst-case, you permanently damage the pickup or booger something and go buy a new pickup... which you were pondering doing anyway. So look at it like there's nothing to lose.

Thanks Blue,,,it will be a learning experience,,,I don't plan on keeping the pickups in the guitar if I can't lower them,,,,they are just too hot,,,it's a player, straight neck, good wood and finish (not like the Chineses ones now a days).

I have an old Gibson lap steel, late 40's maybe early 50's. The pup finally died. So at first I thought maybe it's a break in the coils wire on the very outside of the wind? Started to unwind it looking for a break. After 100 turns I noticed the 2 inside pole magnets were green, so it must be on the very inside of the coils wind, right?

Anyway I called Lindy Fralin for a rewind and the guy who used to do that now works for Mojo. Called and talked to him he said no problem, he's rewound lots of them. OK fine.

He said that pup has 10,000 winds on it.
