Again on my SF Champ build (adding another filter cap )
« on: January 07, 2013, 08:21:04 pm »
I have now  res cap or 47uf then a 1k dropper and a 22uf cap and then a 10K dropper and a 22uf cap . I know if I just add another 22uf cap before the res cap it will add 47uf and 22uf . I don't need the extra filtering and I do have a 47 ohm resister between the rect 5Y3 pin 8 and the res cap so to slow the inrush . The amp is quiet now . but I still feel the 47 uf res cap is a bit much for a 5Y3 even with the 47ohm resister . So if I don't want to drop voltage and add this 22 uf as a res cap can I use say a smaller value dropper between the added 22uf and 47uf filter caps sort of like when on adds a choke that does not have much resistance?

Would anyone say this is worth while ? Would using a 5 watt wire wound resister sort of create part of the affect of a choke?

 It's just a thought.

Don't over filter with a 5Y3 rectifier.Put the amp back to stock specs anmd enjoy it.
A wirewound resistor does sound a bit like a choke cause it does have a sort of inductor feel to it.

I built this champ off of what my fender 1973 Champ came with and that was a 40/20/20 uf cap can so I used what I could find close in separate caps F&T 47/22/22 uf . So that's what I have now . It's fine I'll let it be. I just added the 47 ohm resister to slow the inrush to the 47uf cap and so far it's been fine . I've had two champs so far that had 40/20/20 cap cans and the 40uf was the res cap. I recapped them and still have the original cap cans and used the same CE mallory cap cans to replace the old ones but and the 5Y3 's were still original and ok.
