I just started to try to fingerpick about 2 years ago, right before my son was born. I haven't had much chance to work on it during that time. But it felt like learning to play guitar from the beginning again, as my hands just wouldn't do what I wanted them to do.
Right now I play with a thumbpick, and I don't have long nails on my right hand. That probably inhibits getting a tone that's as even as possible, but it's just not practical for me to have the long nails (even press-on) right now.
I almost.........don't like picks anymore in so many situations.
I'm finding that once you're comfortable with fingerpicking, and learn some approaches that you might not use in flatpicking, that you can get around to some licks easier and faster by fingerpicking. Like the banjo-roll lick at 1:25 on Maybelle (sorry I muddled it a little bit; I'll play it cleaner next time I record).
Yes that roll at 1:25 was what got to me the most.
Very nice!
I started fingerpicking about 2 years ago also.
A friend kept bothering me to teach him classical guitar, and I didn't even play classical!
So, I picked up a book, started reading music, and picking.
Really opened up a whole different world on guitar but moreover, got me out of years of being in a rut playing the same styles.
Writing became more fun.
Agreed about getting around a bit easier on the fretboard.
I haven't been able to master a thumb pick yet.
More power to you.
Probably okay for me though.
I am always afraid I will be out some where and not have a thumb pick and not be able to play!
Peace.
