Is the iec inlet shot on my amp?
« on: March 06, 2013, 09:46:24 am »
I'm getting a very low level hum when I turn on the amp.
Even in standby.
When I push the plug up a bit(it's not glued in just a snap in type)
the hum goes away.
I tried it with another cord same thing.
Bad socket?Any test I can do on the socket?

Check/resolder the wire connections on the back of the socket.

If that doesn't work take a look at the prongs where they come together. Maybe the prongs are oxidized or tarnished. If so, clean them up. Another thing is that the prongs from the inlet can get loose in the molded plastic case. When you push the cord on the prong, the prong can just push inside the casing (into the inside of the amp). I've seen that. It's a blind connection. You can examine this by pushing the cord into the inlet with the amp open to be able to see if it's happening. In any case, the inlet is cheap and easy to replace (unless it's just a solder joint, no need to).

Try a different cord? Maybe the ground contact within your AC cord is loose & not making good contact with the pin on the chassis-connector.

I resoldered the ground wire .
When I measure from the inlet ground tab on the outside to the ground bolt I get .0.
The inlet isn't glued in at all and is a bit loose when you use the cord.
It's a low level hum but it's there alright.
Goes away when I push up  on the inlet so it's not quite 100 percent flush with the amp.
I guess time to get a new inlet!

Any difference between snap in and one with screws?

I highly doubt that the power inlet has anything to do with your low-level hum.Your body is grounding something in the amp that stops the hum.
 I suggest looking elsewhere.

Got a 3-into-2 adapter that allows a grounded plug to plug in to an old-style 2-wire AC outlet? In other words, a ground-defeat adapter. Throw that onto the male end of your AC cord and see if the hum is there and CAN'T be gotten rid of by pressing on the IEC connector.

I still say it's your AC cord, with a loose or defective ground, and swapping one of those cords would be even easier than the 3-into-2 adapter. Isn't it part of the Geneva convention that you have to have at least four extra of those sitting around?

He already tried another cord.
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

I'm using a wood chopstick to push the cord so I'm not grounding anything.
Could the fact that there is no glue there be part of the problem?
The only other thing connected to it would be the power switch.
In any event it's pretty easy to swap out.

No,glue doesn't do anything to an insulated connector.Change the damn thing and then look for the real problem

You might be right and I may have solved it.
I resoldered the live wire from the power switch to the inlet.
It seems to have stopped the hum.
Why is that? Bad solder joint?

Ever since I switched to this hi-tech solder (I think it's 63 /37)I've had some issues.
The solder joints are nice and shiny but I seem to have some problems with it.
I'm going back to 60/40 I think.
