Converted Bassman AB165 to 6G6-B
« on: June 21, 2013, 10:21:39 pm »
I just finished converting an AB165 Bassman to a 6G6-B circuit.

The owner wants to use vintage tung-sol 5881's or 5932's.  This amp's plate voltage is 445 VDC.  Are the 5881's going to hold up even when the max plate voltage of the 5881 is rated for 400 VDC and 360VDC for the 5932's?

I know I have read that the old tung-sols are a tough tube but wanted opinion's from here.

Yes, they will likely hold up.

I've plugged in 50's Tung Sol 5881's and Sylvania 5932's into a variety of Fender amps without bothering to measure the plate voltage. I also didn't realize at the time there was any difference in voltage rating between those and 6L6GC's. I had zero problems in use.

I wish I had my tube stash on-hand... I have a pair of used 5932's that I'll probably never plug into anything that your customer may want. But they several states away.

I installed the 5932's and they are holding strong!  5881's haven't arrived yet.

The owner has 4 good sets of sylvania 5932's so he should be good for a while.

Is the faceplate brown or is it black.  If brown, where did you get it?

The faceplate is black.  Could have done brown if the owner wanted though.  It was made by a laser engraving shop where I live.  He does fantastic work and understands the importance of small details!

Our plan was to not to completely copy everything, the faceplate has a little different design than the original.

Here is a new pic of the re-covered amp:

Only one more detail to add: blonde knobs.
