Will Hoffman cloth wire fit through a 3/32" hole?
« on: October 02, 2013, 10:32:12 am »
I have seen people feed wires from under the board through a hole to a turret on the top board.  I think that keeps the build very neat.

I want to use cloth wire for my build (just because).  Does anyone know if it will fit through a 3/32" hole?

If it doesn't fit then I need to decide:
  • Drill bigger holes by hand
  • Use PVC insulated wire
  • Don't bother with running wires under the board

Opinions welcome.

There's nothing like having parts in your hand. Just buy a few feet from Doug.

There is more you need to consider.  Forgive me is you are aware of this, but you always need to use a rubber grommet in a hole for
chassis pass-though wires.  This requires an oversized hole.  The grommet prevents wear-through of the clothe, PVC, or teflon insulation
that will occurs because of vibrations from the amp. Look under: http://www.hoffmanamps.com/MyStore/perlshop.cgi?action=template&thispage=MiscHardware&ORDER_ID=110494109. Nothing wrong with clothe push-back wire--its is easy, no stripping and
it holds bends.  Avoid passing wires under the small-signal preamp section of your board to minimize noise from circuit interaction.  I will place wires with a little slack from pot to board , for example, and if an oscillation or buzz occurs you can move the wire left or right to minimize it.  No rules, this is what works for me.  Jim
The music industry is a cruel and shallow money trench--a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free and good men left to die like dogs.   There is also a negative side.

Problem is I want to order my board as well.  I could order the wire, but I wouldn't have the board.  I suppose I could order the wire, then drill a hole in some wood to see if it fits. If it doesn't fit, I will leave the holes off the board.  Or, I could just order the board with the holes and just not use them if it doesn't fit.

There is more you need to consider.  Forgive me is you are aware of this, but you always need to use a rubber grommet in a hole for chassis pass-though wires.

The wires aren't going through the chassis, just the turret board material.  Thanks for the heads up though.

I drill all holes with 3/32 bit. Then I enlarge holes for standoffs and pass thru wires as needed. I don't know if 3/32 is large enough for Doug's cloth wire, but it is verrrry easy to enlarge holes, even with a hand drill.
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

I went ahead and ordered the wire and other remaining parts except for the turret board and turrets (I have a staking tool that I got around 10 years ago).  I'm still playing with layout (got some ideas) so I will order the board when I am sure.  I will post back when I get the wire to let people know if it fits.

I just tried to push some yellow cloth wire through a 3/32 hole and it went through fine

Not too tight and not too loose

Only one wire will fit in a 3/32 hole
